As some of you may know, the original Mac OS classic port of the game featured a few Mac-exclusive cheat codes. For example, typing in 'DNMACS' would display "Macs Rule!" on the screen and would replace all the security monitor textures with a Mac OS desktop. Did GOG use the original Mac port or is it just the DOS version running in DOSBox?

I realize the game has been pulled from GOG, but I was fortunate enough to pick it up before that happened and my curiosity got the best of me.

It's the DOS version in boxer standalone, how all OS X DOS versions are packaged (besides ScummVM). Correct me if I'm wrong, but the original Mac port would have been for Mac Classic OS, yes?

Boxer is a DOSBox port, yeah? In answer to your question, you would be correct. I guess it makes sense that GOG would use Boxer. It's possible to run legacy Mac software on macOS through open source emulators such as SheepShaver, however it requires a compatible ROM image and a copy of Mac OS. So that's out of the question. In Duke 3D's case, another (and better) option would be the EDuke32 source port. That would've allowed them to use the data files from the original Mac version. Unfortunately, it's licensed under GNU GPL, which means GOG couldn't sell it. Not that any of this matters now.

Thanks for the reply.

That is incorrect. DOSbox, ScummVM, and Wine are GPL and used by quite a few GOG releases. The license itself allows sale of the software as long as the source is provided.

You're right. I stand corrected.

It's a fork. It has some significant code changes. Also, DOSBox is native on OS X (Linux & Windows).

So, were you able to get the installer extracted?

Er, fork is what I meant. I need to stop posting in the wee hours of the night when I'm tired. :D

I haven't extracted the installer, no. I mainly just wanted to know if GOG's Mac installer used the data files from the original Mac port, but that doesn't seem to be the case if it uses Boxer. I played the game exclusively on PC, so it would've been interesting to see for myself.

Anyone tried to play this lately on MacOS? I had downloaded it a few years ago, but I tried to launch it from GoG Galaxy, but it wouldn't play. I uninstalled it and re-installed it and it still won't launch either from GoG Galaxy or directly from the Applications/Games folder.

I tried to add the game to all of the mentioned Privacy & Security settings and it won't launch. The icon shrinks in Applications, acts like it's trying to start but doesn't report anything or give any notification. It simply doesn't launch.

Anyone seen this and found a fix?

I have 2017 MBP running MacOS v12.4, if that's necessary information. Thank you.

I just tried it myself, and the app is not 64-bit compatible, so it will no longer work on more modern MacOS.

To get the game to run:

1) Download a 64-bit compatible version of Boxer. https://boxer.thec0de.com/
2) Right-click on the GOG Duke Nukem app and select "Show Package Contents" then navigate to Duke Nukem 3D/Contents/Resources/Duke Nukem 3D.boxer ("Show Package Contents" again on that last one) /C.harddisk

That C.harddisk folder is the game itself, drag that folder out of the app and into Boxer.
Alternately to all of this nonsense, you could just ignore Dosbox and run it via EDuke.

Alternate to that, if source ports are sorcery to you, you can just download a version of Dosbox that's actually using modern code.
