I read somewhere that the Architects' Edition is Drod 1 with some improvements. Is this true and is it the complete version of Drod 1 or just a sampling? Thanks.

From the Wiki - "Version 1.6, also called DROD: Architects' Edition, included improvements to some of the graphics, but most importantly a level editor, and was released in 2003. Community-designed rooms and levels are grouped together in packages called "holds", and extend the gameplay beyond the community-imposed challenges of previous versions."

Thanks. I've played with the Architects' Edition a bit, but it seems somewhat "incomplete" which is why I'm curious if it is the full DROD 1 game. Then again, DROD 1 may be lacking any real setup or "story".

Architect's Edition does have the full DROD 1 level set, but there's no story to speak of except in the end credits.

The version of DROD 1 on GOG is the "commercial remake" of King Dugan's Dungeon referred to in that Wikipedia article -- the same level set as Architect's Edition, but with a better engine and a few extra secret rooms. There's really no reason to play Architect's edition any more except for historical interest, and the lack of certain features like undo will drive you insane. :)

Thanks for clarifying this. I'll give the architects' edition an hour of play. If I still like it after that period, a purchase will be in my future (next flash sale).

edit- Bought!

There are three versions of DROD 1:

1. Original DROD made by Webfoot Technologies. Nowadays, the full version is almost impossible to find.
2. DROD: Architect's Edition - Above game remade from scratch by Caravel Games. The graphics is very similiar to the original.
3. DROD: King Dugan's Dungeon - DROD 1 on DROD 2's engine.

Levels from DROD 1 and 2 are also available for DROD 3, but they require CaravelNet subscription.

Actually, four versions:
4. FlashDROD : King Dugan's Dungeon Lite - free Flash (play in your browser) port of DROD1, currently 2/3 complete. It's split into episodes each containing 4 levels and a "mastery level", and has extra secret rooms and achievements.

Oops, missed that. There is one more - 2002 version of Caravel DROD. Unlike the 2003 version (Architects' Edition), it doesn't have an editor. Some people count this older version as a separate game.
