Is there strength in numbers, Arisen?

Or is it generally better to travel with fewer pawns or alone?

What gives a more satisfying experience?

There is strength in numbers, and playing with 3 pawns is a lot easier than 1.
Alone would not only be very hard, it would take a lot away from the game, not having a least your own pawn to train.

It depends.
If you play as Sorcerer or Mage, the party is a necessity. Unless you are a masochist ;)
on the other hand
Assassin is a loner by design (Autonomy, duh).

There's also a matter of leveling. The more Pawns you have the less XP you gain for kills. Some like it, some prefer to level up fast.

Last but nit least, playing alone is very sothing, as Pawn quirks may easily piss you off.

But definitely both ways are worth checking as monster behavior often varies depending on that.
Thank you both for your feedback. I guess either style is valid. It's definitely scarier and more interesting going it alone, but I have to admit these crazy pawns grow on you, even though they do some stupid things at times. And they were put in the game for a reason.

I'm also not quite sure how to tackle solo play if only due to not having 3 pack mules to help lug around my junk!

Maybe I'll do a happy medium, and just bring my created pawn, but no others? A little mix of challenge and atmosphere with gameplay bonus?

More like:
first there was a Custom Mercenary Character (Pawn) game idea
then there was Dragon's Dogma game built around it
;)
IMO Capcom failed to accomplish the original vision for Pawn based game.

Perhaps! I don't know the history. You could be exactly right, whether you were joking or not. It's definitely far from a perfect game. But it has its merits, and I enjoy a lot of it.

Thanks for sharing, I'll take a look later! Happy gaming!
Playing with less pawns means you level up faster, gaining strength faster. If you play solo or with your main pawn instead of a party of 4, you'll gain levels faster, thus personally your character (and your main) will be stronger than playing with a party of 4.

It's up to you. It's easier with a party of 4 since there are more distractions for monsters to attack, letting you survive a bit easier. Of course pawns aren't too bright , but even just being there lets them be meat shields. Most players will play with a full party their first time, and when they are smarter and handle foes easier they usually will play solo or drop the 2 extra tag alongs and just keep their main pawn as a companion during the game.

If you play solo, when you do get your main pawn back out, it will level up very fast to catch up to your level, so if you play to level 100 and your main pawn is left back and is only level 50, don't worry he will be zipping up in experience and levels fast to catch up to match your level 100.

Up to you how you play, I played the normal game the first time with a full party, and then 2nd new game+ just played without the extra pawns on hard mode, so i'd get faster leveling and get personally stronger instead of doing it slower.

Thanks! Good advice, and good to know. My first time was also with a full party, so might go for just the main pawn next time.
its actually the total levels of your party that counts so for some examples;

you and your pawn are levels 10-30, have a level mates level 100 pawn helps a LOT which speeds up the game for doing plot quests

later at level 80 - 100 taking a low level [under 50] pawn along will draw monsters to you for farming and also changes the ramdon mix you get as you grind i.e, that lower monster instead of the normal red dragon you would see without the low pawn... its also nice way to level up a mates new pawn
