Hooyaah: Having to be online means the game can "check up on you" to make sure that you actually own it or that it can be disabled if the company wants your copy to be revoked. Any game that requires an online connection to play (and get special items and/or achievements) is as good as DRM to me.
Oh, "can" check?
Are aven aware how stupid sounds what you say? Dragon's Dogma online service is as cost effective and rudimentary as you can get. It was based around Playstation leaderboards - this is where numerous technical limitation come from. It's incapable of verifying shit, not even mentioning tampering with your game.

So, online games bad? This explains a lot. Well, whether you want it or not, some video games' features will always require server connection - not because DRM, but beacuse they are online services, they cannot work offline. One of such services if your Galaxy profile - y know, the thingy capable of registering and displaying your achievements. No XBOX Live! account, no achievements. No PSN account, no achievements. No Steam account, no achievements. No Galaxy, no achievements.
