Hi everyone. For some reason in Ultimate Doom I can't accept the new key bindings I just remapped. I went into controller setup and changed the strafe keys to A+D and forward/backward to W+S, but hitting F10 will not save the keys. Hitting ESC to abort and Enter to select works just fine, but for whatever reason F10 will not work. So my controls have stayed the same. Is there a way around this so that I can finally save the new keys?

Also, there is some input I can put into a file to disable vertical mouse movement? Or do I have to get a mod for that?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
I recommend using a source port called GZDoom. It has better support for modern pcs. There are lots of options so you can play it like a modern shooter or preserve the original look and feel of the game.

Thank you very much. Where is the best/safest place to get that mod?

You can get GZDoom here:
http://gzdoom.drdteam.org/page.php?page=download

Just to be clear, it's not a mod. It's a source port. It replaces the engine for the graphics, controls, sound, etc. You still need the Doom wad files.

Make a new directory. for example: GZDoom. Then Unzip the gzdoom zip file into that new directory. Copy your wad files from your Doom installation into your GZDoom directory.

Then run your gzdoom.exe file and set up your options. There are lots of options, so dig around in the menus to find them all.

Great. I shall do that. Thank you!
There's no need to manually copy your WAD files. GZDoom detects a GOG.com install and automatically loads the game from that.

Ah, good to know. Thanks!

Actually you don't even need to move it anywhere these days. At least ZDoom will autodetect all compatible WADs that can be used as a base.

EDIT: Whoops, already mentioned. Since I'm using this space, here are a couple of alternatives if you'd like them:

ZDoom: Most mappacks and mods will either use GZdoom or Zdoom as a recommendation (if it's not made for vanilla). I usually keep a copy of both around, as they try to update around the same time anyway (not always). If your computer is running GZDoom slower for whatever reason, use this instead.

Chocolate Doom: This one is as close to vanilla as possible, including bugs. The reason for this is a more authentic experience, and because much older WADs such as Batman Doom will not run on newer sourceports out of the box.

On Windows 10 I encountered the problem that the settings wouldn't be saved unless I started the game "as administrator".

Also, if you want to play Doom 1 or 2 as they were originally, instead of having unintended full mouse aiming, unintended jumping, filtered textures, higher resolution and all that modern jazz, I recommend Chocolate Doom. It aims to recreate Doom exactly as it used to be, including little quirks and flaws, only made compatible with modern systems.

And if you fancy at least some accomodations to modern gaming, Crispy Doom adds some of the most requested features like proper higher resolution support to Chocolate Doom, while still maintaining the classic look and feel.

Have fun!

Woops, already mentioned, my bad. I can say, though, I've played through Doom 1 and currently Doom 2 using Chocolate Doom and it works flawlessly. There is no need to be afraid of the "bugs" mentioned, most players usually wouldn't notice.
I understand why many prefer ZDoom or GZDoom (especially for modern mods, obviously), but I usually try to play older games as close to the way they used to be, and for that Chocolate Doom is just perfect. I actually find Doom quite a bit more atmospheric with the low resolution graphics, I must say.

Good to know. I might check those out too. Thanks!
So I just put in GZDoom and it does not seem to be detecting the files. I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong? (Forgive me, I am not that tech savvy.)

Also, a NEW problem I am having (I actually was having this problem before I posted this topic, but I thought it wasn't going to be much of an issue and it would go away)...

So whenever I try to load a game and I enter Load Game, it immediately kicks me back to the starting menu. Does it every time. Can't even get into a saved game. I am completely baffled. NONE of my other PC games does this. I even tried uninstalling the game and installing it again. GZDoom has not affected it either.

I'm sorry, but does anyone have an idea what I should do about this?

EDIT: by the way, I am on Windows 8.1. I have already played the game multiple times and currently into Episode 2, around the time I finally decided to look into source ports. So I don't get why the game would do this now.

EDIT 2: that newer problem seems like it only happens some of the time. Running as an administrator has circumvented it a couple times, so it seems to be an on-off thing. However, still am not getting it to recognize GZDoom is in there. If I can't get that to work, then maybe I will just try Chocolate or Crispy Doom.

No need to be sorry :)

Have you installed GZDoom as hudfreegamer has suggested? You should have a folder into which you extracted GZDoom that is seperate from your GOG Doom installation. In that GZDoom folder you should only need to start the "gzdoom.exe", and that should automatically detect your GOG Doom installation.
If you don't run the "gzdoom.exe", it also won't change anything about your GOG Doom installation, it is running completely by itself.

Apologies for the long delay in response. Yeah, GZDoom loads up fine now. I'll have to mess around with the settings in it later on, but I did suck it up and play the original Doom with its controller settings, haha. Still a little awkward, but I've gotten much more comfortable with the ALT to strafe. In fact, I just got around to beating the fourth episode just a few minutes ago.

I'd say this is pretty much resolved then. Thanks again for your help, everybody!
