Like the title says. When it comes to playing Brutal Doom, is it better on ZDoom or GZDoom? Are there any notable differences between playing on one or the other?

Taken from the Installation steps on the MODDB Brutal Doom FAQ page:

"1) You need a ZDoom derivated sourceport to run it. You can use Zandronum or GZDoom."

I'd say use GZDoom, unless you intend to use multiplayer, in which case Zandronum is easier to set up.

GZDoom has a bit more graphical "flare" to it; Particle systems on blood, smoother lighting, etc. ZDoom looks a little bit more faithful to the original Doom look (IE - More classic pixelated look). That's about the only difference.

For Brutal Doom, unless you're running the "Hell on Earth" pwad, it doesn't affect the game enough to make one matter more than the other. It's purely an aesthetic choice of look.

Huh, I haven't seen someone use the same icon as OP's in a loooong time.

Anyway it's pretty simple: GZDoom just results in a prettier looking Brutal Doom, not much more. I usually keep a copy of both sourceports around, solely because some WADs prefer one source port and not the other due to technical reasons (DoomRL Arsenal or Reelism, for example).

I like both ZDoom and GZDoom for differing reasons. GZDoom does make the Doom games, as well as Strife/Heretic/Hexen, look prettier. ZDoom has a very '16bit'ish' aesthetic to it giving it an old Sega Genesis/Mega Drive feel. And both run Strife, Heretic, and Hexen.

GZDoom is also great for running old Doom Engine games on Linux. I use it with Linux Mint and Linux Lite, via Wine. To keep the music on, go into OPTIONS>SOUND and set it to OPL Synth Emulation. Tahdah! Runs great.
