PimPamPet: You mean you're using the IWADs from the BFG edition? I believe they are known for not being 100% compatible with mods. For whatever reason, Bethesda (or whoever was in charge) decided to butcher the classic Doom games that were included with Doom 3 BFG to take out all references to Wolfenstein, among other changes.
They've change the secret levels, destroyed some sprites, textures and music (Wolfenstein stuff), changed one menu graphic and removed all references to the Red Cross and replaced them with the symbol of a pill.

AFAIK none of those changes should cause any huge problems with mods, if you don't try to play with/against other people that use the original wad.

Should I just map Brutal Doom to my GOG copies then? I don't know how to do it if I already own a BD copy and simply copy and pasting the files into the GOG Doom folder doesn't appear to work. I don't even know the BFG bug is because of the BFG versions.
What's Metal Doom? My current Brutal Doom doesn't appear to have any references to that in the folder.

Magmarock: I am surprised there's no sticky here for brutal Doom. Maybe this one can be.

Brutal Doom is my favourite mod and I would like to show you how to it to work the GOG version of Doom.

1. Download GZDoom http://www.osnanet.de/c.oelckers/gzdoom/download.html and extract it.

2. Download both brutal Doom and Metal Doom and extract the contents http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/downloads/brutal-doom-version-20

http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/downloads/doom-metal-soundtrack-mod-volume-4

3. Start DZDoom to create a local .ini file.

4. You'll need both the Brutal Doom and Metal Doom .pk3 to the GZDoom .ini file under the [Doom.Autoload]

There are two methods of doing this.

Typing in the address of the .pk3 files or adding the files to the GZDoom directory and just typing path=.

Here's an example of method one
[Doom.Autoload]
path=C:\Address\of\brutalv20.pk3
path=C:\Address\of\DoomMetalVol4.wad

Here's what you type if the .pk3 files are in the dirctory
[Doom.Autoload]
path=brutalv20.pk3
path=DoomMetalVol4.wad

5. Next GZDoom will have to find the Doom.wad file. It should be in C:\GOG Games\DOOM

Doom II C:\GOG Games\DOOM 2\doom2

Final Doom TNT C:\GOG Games\Final DOOM\TNT

Final Doom Plutonia C:\GOG Games\Final DOOM\Plutonia

The easiest way to make GZDoom find these files is to simply copy them into the directory, but you can also add their address to the .ini file if you want.
If you want to add them to the .ini instead of copying them follow this example
[IWADSearch.Directories]
path=C:\GOG Games\DOOM
path=C:\GOG Games\DOOM 2\doom2
path=C:\GOG Games\Final DOOM\Plutonia
path=C:\GOG Games\Final DOOM\TNT

That's it, I hope this was helpful and let me know what you think of the Brutal Doom mod.
It's only letting me choose the BFG IWADS and not the GOG ones I added to the ini file. What's going on?

EDIT: I've now tried deleting all Brutal Doom files from the Steam version folder and starting anew but there is still an error that stops it launching.

The error is: Script error "brutalv20.pk3:cvarinfo line 1: cvar bd_bloodamount' already exists.

How do I fix it?

RE EDIT: I've found a rough work around by loading it from GZ Doom itself. I don't know if this will work for the other Dooms though.

Final entry here: Sorry if I appear to be spamming. I needed this problem fixed and my brother, who got BD working for me in the first place isn't here right now.

What's that mean? If it's a Facebook/Twitter thing, don't bother because I hate Facebook/Twitter etc. so I don't have an account on either of those.

You can send private messages here on GOG. That's what he means.

I recommend ZDL, which is a launcher that allows you to select which wads you want to load upon starting your source port of choice.

As for the GZDoom error you're getting, are you sure you're using the latest version?

I have no idea. I think it's the latest one. I was able to get it working by adding the files into both the steam and GOG D2 and just using the GZDOOM executable. that appears to sidestep the fatal error.
If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that the gzdoom.ini file you are using is referencing Doom IWADs from both Steam and GOG installations. Just get GZDoom to only reference the GOG ones and see if that helps. Or delete/rename the .WAD files in the Steam version to prevent them being used.

This is good guide but there a more comfortable way operating the GZDoom and all the addons through utility called ZDL, which is cooperating with the GZDoom itself, also it is recommended for launching and playing Brutal Doom and Project Brutality respectively with all desired add-ons, here a shot from my config:

Personally, I go old school by writing my own .bat files to run GZDoom with command line interface so that I can specify the IWAD, PWADs, save folder, config file, etc. I don't have to rely on a third party launcher.
I did try zdl but for me http://doomutils.ucoz.com/load/doom_explorer/4 seems to work better
I like Brutal Doom if only for the fact that you get an assault rifle instead of a lame pistol. Don't really care for the gore.

What about the liquids that replace the original's shitty "hotplate polygons"?

That's something that M1A1 did too as Marathon 1 could also only support hotplates whereas Marathon 2 and Infinity had liquids.

M1A1 used transparent liquids in conjunction with the original hotplates in the lava only to create a pretty shimmering effect which worked a little better with the old textures and not so well in deep pools.

Even the first and second Tomb Raider's had hotplates in lieu of actual lava (except the shallow pools in Temple of Xian) and it's cheating.

EDIT: Also GZDoom and Brutal Doom together have much better platforming. I love first person platforming in games but the only times it doesn't work are Ultima Underworld (for obvious reasons) and vanilla Doom.

In that, you can't look up or down at all and you drop like a stone when falling which makes the sprint of faith difficult.

Marathon got Doom's Sprint of Faith right and made it really fun after some practice..

You could look most of the way up and down to let you judge your jumps, you hovered slowly down picking up momentum as you went which let you jump up to slightly higher ledges and you have grenade jumping, grenade climbing, wall-walking and flamethrower jetpacking.

80% of those acrobatics were nerfed in the sequels but are still possible, only much harder.
