I am surprised there's no sticky here for brutal Doom. Maybe this one can be.

Brutal Doom is my favourite mod and I would like to show you how to it to work the GOG version of Doom.

1. Download GZDoom http://www.osnanet.de/c.oelckers/gzdoom/download.html and extract it.

2. Download both brutal Doom and Metal Doom and extract the contents http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/downloads/brutal-doom-version-20

http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/downloads/doom-metal-soundtrack-mod-volume-4

3. Start DZDoom to create a local .ini file.

4. You'll need to add both the Brutal Doom and Metal Doom .pk3 to the GZDoom .ini file under the [Doom.Autoload]

There are two methods of doing this.

Typing in the address of the .pk3 files or adding the files to the GZDoom directory and just typing path=.

Here's an example of method one
[Doom.Autoload]
path=C:\Address\of\brutalv20.pk3
path=C:\Address\of\DoomMetalVol4.wad

Here's what you type if the .pk3 files are in the dirctory
[Doom.Autoload]
path=brutalv20.pk3
path=DoomMetalVol4.wad

5. Next GZDoom will have to find the Doom.wad file. It should be in C:\GOG Games\DOOM

Doom II C:\GOG Games\DOOM 2\doom2

Final Doom TNT C:\GOG Games\Final DOOM\TNT

Final Doom Plutonia C:\GOG Games\Final DOOM\Plutonia

The easiest way to make GZDoom find these files is to simply copy them into the directory, but you can also add their address to the .ini file if you want.
If you want to add them to the .ini instead of copying them follow this example
[IWADSearch.Directories]
path=C:\GOG Games\DOOM
path=C:\GOG Games\DOOM 2\doom2
path=C:\GOG Games\Final DOOM\Plutonia
path=C:\GOG Games\Final DOOM\TNT

That's it, I hope this was helpful and let me know what you think of the Brutal Doom mod.

Brutal Doom has actually been mentioned a number of times in these forums. It was these forums that first made me aware of it when I was asking about different Doom source ports. I think even a GOG Staff member commented on Brutal Doom.

I've played it since v18 (when I found out about it) and I do enjoy it, but I have also played Brutal Doom Johnny Edtion (BDJ) which makes some changes. There are other modifications of Brutal Doom available, too, like Project Brutality.

For me, I like it, but some prefer the classic Doom style. Also, the author made some comments at one point that alienated some of the audience, so some now refuse to play the mod.

What did he say?

It was about someone who was saying they wanted to commit suicide.

Sgt Mark IV was then banned from the zdoom forums.

Can't say I see what the drama is about? Is it because he didn't take the threat seriously?

I heard about this after it had all happened, so I don't know the exact details. I would imagine he didn't take it seriously, but I gather the way he handled it was rather callous. Anyway, the result was he was banned from the zdoom forums and that particular thread was deleted.
For the love of God, don't bring the drama of the ZDoom forums over here too. I've been a member there until I got banned for saying my opinions. Oh but what do I know, it's okay to urge someone to commit suicide but it's bad to report the same person who urged suicide?

Didn't see that part.
Nah, don't worry. I won't get into that shit again. I'll just clear off from the Doom section on Gog's forums.

I have Brutal Doom active on my Steam disk BFG edition and I found that the BFG 9000 is broken in at least classic mode of the latest version.

It let's you use it once in the entire episode and if you run out of ammo or even switch to another gun, it won't let you switch back to the BFG no matter how many times you mash the 7 key. This bug was mentioned on the forums by someone else but no-one offered him any help and his post was buried under several other unrelated ones too.

You mean you're using the IWADs from the BFG edition? I believe they are known for not being 100% compatible with mods. For whatever reason, Bethesda (or whoever was in charge) decided to butcher the classic Doom games that were included with Doom 3 BFG to take out all references to Wolfenstein, among other changes.
As one who only "discovered" Brutal Doom after coming into these forums. While BD is good, I've found myself liking Brutal Doom: Project Brutality a bit more and with that I typically use the included UDV hud mod, Dark doom lite ( i found that in a Doom playthrough video) Nice Blood on the Walls, DHTP & a music mod
