When I tried to play the game it would crash.

I was able to fix it by doing this:

Run the updater, default location is "C:\GOG Games\Don't Starve\updater\22\updater.exe".
In the updater, click on File and then Check Consistency. It needed to download a lot of the files again, but then the game was playable. Other people are reporting this on the Klei forum, so I think there must be a compatibility issue with the updater and the latest GOG installer.

I could not find checksums for the installers, but here are mine if you want to compare in case your installers may be corrupted.

It's not just GOG either, I've seen people with humble version having the same issue, and this version of GOG installer was working fine with previous patch. Whatever they did with standalone updater for the current patch is failing to pull proper exe version, but just game versions below certain number/update that are affected it seems.

But yeah, it's a known issue, check consistency will likely fix it, or so it seemed to do for everyone else, me included. I wonder if GOG could rebuild their installers on their own, since all my (our) attempts to make Klei submit updated game or fix this bug have been in vain.

Thnaks for showing how to run the check consistency. Spent an hour trying to figure out how to update this game. This fixed my problem.

I had the same problem last month and just figured it out with the Check Consistency after searching Klei Entertainment's forum.
So GOG, please update the installers, because the current ones are from April. Most likely this is the final version of the game. There are no major updates in months and the developers are working now on Don't Starve Together.

Having exactly same problem at the moment, spent 1 hour trying to reinstall everything until I checked klei forums.

Clicking "File->Check Consistency" on the updater as suggested here as well finally did the job, but it seems that GOG needs to patch the standalone version or at least put a sticky note on the forums.
