irondog: Maxing Lockpick helps you win the bet with Rodgar, too.
avatar
Raze_Larian: I'd rather loose the bet, and think of it like buying a (relatively cheap) Lockpick skill book.
waaaait there are skillbooks????? you mean like spellbooks, just for skills?
avatar
Soccorro: so do you think a warrior should spend 5 points for that skill?
avatar
Polly77: Oh yes :)

But I admire you for playing as a Warrior as I think that's the hardest class, especially at the start of the game. I tend to choose Survivor and then increase Agility and Intelligence to blend Survivor with Mage skills, so lockpicking is a skill I would naturally choose to put skill points into. Playing as a pure Warrior deserves a medal!
well i found that out very early. I thought i'd be able to go "WAAARGH" through all the orcs that were outside that healer village. What actually happened was, i ran back to that knight that was defending the village, crying for help. but it is still a class that gets sh*t done. and by that i mean he looks into his enemy's eyes while striking him with his two handed sword. i like that.

Yes there are skillbooks that you find and can buy.

Check the shops out near the market place. One of them in particular gets skillbooks in on a regular basis, but you need to keep checking to take advantage of this.

Have fun! :)

There are no random skill books, like you can find for mage spell books (there is a set of 3 books that can teach a level of Trader's Tongue, though, and non-mage skills can be given as quest rewards). I meant if you considered loosing the bet to be purchasing a Lockpick skill book, it would be relatively cheap.

are 25000 enough to get any of those books?

As I recall, depending on how much the trader likes you or the skill points you already have in Trader's Tongue, a skill book in Trader's Tongue will cost you between 6 and 8 thousand. Somewhere in there. If you buy all those oddball things from the scam artist in the Blue Boar, you'll end up getting a skill book/point in TT for 25 hundred. Not too bad. I dumped them in a chest and forgot about them. I should have tried to sell them just to see how much they would bring or if there is anything a merchant won't buy.

I don't recall the price range spell books tend to be when offered for sale (lowish to mid thousands?); that 25k should get a couple spell books, at least. In my first game (disk version) I had enough gold and loot to trade for any spell book that looked remotely interesting (playing a warrior I maxed Aura of Guarding, Spell Shield, Resurrect and Freeze from purchased or found spell books, and got a few levels of various other mage spells).

Alright thanks. and when i equip the holy piece of wood, i need for the summoner quest, a button appears on the middle of the screen. is that normal?

Ah... I don't think so. I just checked, using the either talking tree branch it just shows up as a two handed staff when equipped (female survivor; don't know if that would make a difference).

BTW, the save I loaded was near Ars Magicana, so I checked Blake, and he had a Hell Spikes spell book; without the Trader's Tongue skill, with an opinion of 0 he asked 6750 for it, but was willing to part with it for 4500 when he had an opinion of 100.

hmmm, i always have a tree branch button on the midle of the screen, when i buy it from that trader in verdistis, maybe he is bugged?

Soccorro: maybe he is bugged?
Could be; I'm not even sure what a tree branch button is.

Double checking buying the fake tree branch again, Mpenzak had a Limbs of Lead spell book for: 12,000 gold (at 0 opinion), 9,000 (at 100) or 7,500 (at 100, with Trader's Tongue level 5).

When I buy the fake branch it does not get added to the 'browse weapons' menu until I move it in my inventory or equip it. Maybe your game was trying to add the icon early, but the weapon menu wasn't open so it was displaced and unresponsive?
