Doesn't matter what I try I cannot get the resolution to stay. Through config 1920x1080 crashes the game and setting it manually, well the game doesnt even load.

Anyone got any suggestions?

What OS are you running?

AFAIK, you can only configure DD to use 1920 x 1080 manually using the config.div file located in the DD install directory. 1920 x 1080 (1280 x 1024 the highest available) is not an option using the configtool.exe that comes with DD. How are you setting this res other than the manual method? The tool is located in the install directory or via the menu for the game which is added at install. If the screen res width and height numbers are inverted when setting the res manually in the config.div file you will get similar results.

Try setting the res at a lower nominal value and see if the game will load. If your monitor does not support 1920 x 1080 the game will fail to load. I assume it will but mention it as a possible reason for the crashing.

Are you running the game as an admin? Right click the game icon, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark "Run this program as an administrator" found under the Privilege Level section at the bottom. I also check "Disable visual themes", "Disable desktop composition" and "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings".

Edit: BTW, retail DD disks do not support resolutions other than those provided by the configtool.exe as only V1.005A will allow wide screen / high res. There is a V 1.005A patch available but some community members claim the patch is flawed. I would suggest buying the GOG release of DD rather than patching since it is at V 1.005A. Your version should be shown in the lower right corner of the start screen. I believe the last available retail disks were released at V 1.0034 ( V1.34) with older disks being at even lower version numbers.

I wasn't aware the configtool file isn't suppose to be giving me the option for 1920x1080... but it does! I'm not going to question that one. The standard resolutions work but naturally with such a big res it doesn't scale very well.

I would also try setting your res manually to 1920 x 1024. Sometimes using nominal values close to your monitors max res will work. Still gives you the higher res at a slightly lower setting . . . =)

Edit: I found a lower res worked better for me since the higher res made the text and characters very small.

Thats a good idea actually. I'll go give that a try. I'm just trying out the resolutions as we speak. :)

The configtool.exe may show higher resolutions. I only have it installed on an old XP system now but IIRC the supported resolutions were hard coded into the config tool.

The config tool may show the higher res's or possibly GOG / Larian updated the tool since I downloaded the game a couple of years ago. I need to re-install DD on my wide screen system and see what resolutions it offers. Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most . . . =)

Actually, the download version config tool gets the resolutions from the system, and should list any that the video card and monitor say they support.
If you are only getting 1280x1024 as the maximum resolution, you likely replaced the config tool with that from the disk version of the game (ie in order to set the game to run in Software or Direct Draw rendering mode, rather than Direct3D).

I play DD at 1152x864, as the text is a little small at higher resolutions (never tried the font enlargement patch). Just looking at the 1280x resolutions, though, in Win98 the config tool reports 1280x768, the proper aspect ratio of 1280x960 and 1280x1024, the same as Windows lists in the Display Properties. In XP there are another couple of options in both, 1280x720 and 1280x800. I never tried DD in non 4:3 aspect ratios on this system, but Windows will switch to those resolutions.

Well it would seem my game will only supports upto 1280x1024. Though I tried the resolution you use and I must admit despite the fact it's not full screen it's not overly stretched. Alot easier on the eyes then some resolutions.

I personally recommend the font enlargement patch for high resolutions that Raze mentioned.

Nope, it still looks great. Dialogues may look a little odd at first. But, inventory/tooltips, dialogues, and books can all be installed separately. Inventory/tooltips is the most important because they are the smallest. Dialogues and books are a matter of taste. I enlarge everything personally.

Sadly no. There was a character editor and an item editor from the days of yore that are probably still around somewhere. No one really used them to create mods though (making your own item sets was fun though).

There was no SDK released for DD so modding was hard. One guy was working on an increased enemies mod but he had to place each enemy by hex edit which took forever, so it never saw the light of day,

ok i know im only beginner level 7 but increased enemies? were they mad? lol

Now that I go back and look at it, it was actually a potential item and skill mod. I was actually the one suggesting he should add enemies.
