Here I am a lowbie mage checking out the farm areas and some random farmer tells me to hunt down the trolls so I find the lair and there is the lone Troll King.. I chat it up a bit and then we set to murder eachother and then Larian gives me the proverbial troll face as who knows how many damn trolls appear at the call of the Troll King and they massacre me. Repeat attempts didn't fair any better. That was insane I must retreat and come back when I'm stronger.

Larian must have gotten some lol's for adding that in the game.

I must say raise skeleton isn't as helpful as I would like it to be they don't follow you around and they are insanely weak. Even with Master Summoner maxed for my level.

You are not forced to immediately solve this quest. Scout around a bit and level up few times first. :-)

Yeah I plan on returning when I'm a god compared to those damn trolling trolls.
I found it amusing though

Is there any point in the game where I can reset my skill points? I really dislike the summoning stuff. I have 3 or 4 raised skele's now yet they are awful. I deeply regret choosing that as a skill. I keep thinking if I keep pumping points into it and the summon mastery skill they will start doing me some justice.

But I've watched 3 of them attack 1 orc and the 1 orc kill all 3 of them. Then they are horribly slow and don't aggro worth a damn so if the mob is chasing me, the skele's often can't stop it long enough to hit it.

I was level 11 when I entered the troll cave with my warrior, with a few of the trolls enough to get me to level 12. The first time I tried it I immediately ran back to the left after the conversation ended, and took out a couple of the trolls there before the king and some of his henchmen could engage. I needed a couple potions once surrounded, but 2 or 3 spin attacks cleared out some of the trolls, and reduced the damage I was taking significantly (going up a level helped with the full health/mana, but I didn't pause to distribute stat points or boost skills).
Some time after that, I reloaded the same save to check something out and when the conversation ended the troll king cast his slow spell on me before I could make a strategic withdrawal, meaning there were more opponents in the mob, and I was less able to defend or do damage. I still won, but it too about 10 minor restoration potions.

There is no way in-game to reset your skill points, but you can use iZakaroN's SaveEditor (or from Kiya's site, with description) to do so.

What class/build are you playing? Warriors tend to have plenty of skill points, especially if they rely on purchased spell books for mage skills (Free skills, and spell books you can buy).

You need the Aura of Command spell to get summoned or resurrected creatures to follow you.

I'm a weakly mage. I've been putting points into Intelligence and Constitution only 3 int 2 con each level.

I've put most of my points split up a few in some of the elemental attacks. been keeping my skele's and summon mastery maxed. I've also invested in Lockpicking and Alchemy.

I can fight stuff pretty good if I can kite. But there is no room in that cave to kite.
And my skele's are useless other than occasionally being a momentary distraction.
... are you the same Raze I'm talking to over on the other board lol?

I generally don't play mages, but level 4 or 5 of Hell Spikes is great for groups of opponents, when you are a high enough level to learn it (lower levels aren't that great). Deathly Disks is also good in close quarters or if you are surrounded. Burning Wall is good for groups if you have room to move. With my warrior I found a Burning Wall spell book in Mardaneus' house, and it was the only way I could manage to kill the spider in one of the rooms at the bottom of the catacombs. It also came in handy for some of the stronger orcs south of Aleroth, though once I met the travelling merchant on the path to the cursed abbey and bought a better sword, I never used it again.

For individual opponents, level 1 of the Survivor's Curse spell case a few times first will make elemental or poison attacks much more effective (or Polymorph).

Yeah I saw your name and pic and I was like O_o wasn't I just talking to this guy on the official boards lol.

Well I'll defintely check out Aura of command, I was really annoyed my summons were stationary for the most part. I'll pump a few more points into them and see if they get better.

If not I may decid to reroll and restart, I'm not one for hacking my game I want to do whatever I do legitly. I'm not usually a mage, I tend to be more visceral and pick something melee but I thought I'd try something different.
I'm not sure what summons are the best. I remember someone (in the minority) arguing the benefits of Summon Vermin, since the rats attracted the attention of any opponents, who would target them rather than your character.

Kaan's Mage Guide

Playing a mage character...
Trolls are very weak to Lightning. Level up elsewhere, pump up that spell, come back and annihilate them.

Playing a summoner in DD

Also, a mage is the true conqueror of this game.

This is my first time playing this game as well and playing a thief. Im guessing mages start out weak and end up being one of the strongest pc in game. There is one way of course you can kill them easily invest at least one point in poison weapon skill its a very powerful skill and would take down trolls easily. And also carry a few shadow potions in case things get to fast and you need to recover.
Well I beat the trolls last night. I leveled up enough to have a few skele's 2 rats and lightning. Took a number of healing potions but I did kill the filthy beasts.

Can't wait till that command aura is high enough to work on my full party of critters.
