After hearing favorable reviews and liking what I saw I decided to buy DD from GOG but there is a big problem...

Basically my computer exceeds the requirements for it by double, it plays Lionheart, Diablo 2, etc... basically all similar games with equivalent requirements very well. Honestly it is the only game I have on my computer that lags and I have many games, older/newer with lower/higher requirements.

For some reason after making my character and loading it up my character is in a small room with a bed,shelf, etc and whenever I click to move it takes him AGES to get anywhere, I clicked to move across the small room and it took about 25-30 seconds, it was like he was walking in quick sand, also there is a bit of mouse lag as well.

I have read many other posts on this issue but nothing has helped so I decided to post my own Topic on here. i have tried EVERYTHING mentioned, The downloadable DDtool, checking for driver updates, switching resolutions, lowering game settings, compatibility mode for every windows version, running as an administrator, re-installing, restarting my computer, checking my RAM/memory available, making MORE room for no reason, disc defragmentation, and last but not least checking every single folder that is in the install folder for any sort of files that are obscured or missing.

I have NEVER had this issue before, not even World of Warcraft/The Witcher/any other recent games I TRIED to no avail on max settings don't lag as bad as this game, yes they are unplayably laggy but they still don't lag this bad which is saying something.

I am totally baffled and I don't know what to do anymore, the game is supposedly Vista compatible and my computer is over half a decade newer than the game itself, yes my graphics card is integrated but it is still above the recommended for this game so that shouldn't be an issue.

Anyways I really want to play this game but I am having no luck, please help.

Hi Travalanche, would you post your system specs? It would help to know exactly what they are. Sorry to hear you've had these problems as it is a fun game.

Also, when you reinstalled . . . did you have UAC turned off? Did you install in a directory outside of Program Files? Did you right-click the setup file and click "Run as an administrator" in the resulting dialog? (I ask this only because some folks have said their "account" was an admin account and they did not install the game correctly.)

You might also do the following - disconnect from the internet, turn UAC off, disable both your Anti-virus and Firewall . . . try playing the game. If it plays correctly, turn the av and firewall on one at a time until you find which is causing the problem. Often one or the other, or both, will interfere with the game exe reading or writing to disk. Making the div.exe a trusted program in the firewall would be my first suggestion.

My first DD install was doing strange things (also slow as well). The DD program would not allow firewall confirmation requests to show in front of the game screen. When I closed the game the firewall closed the requests. I Alt-Tabbed out of the game for some reason and found the firewall was asking for multiple confirmations concerning the game. Making the div.exe a trusted program solved the problem for me.

Hopefully your system specs will give me other clues as well . . . =)

Yeah my UAC was off and I ran it as an administrator, I actually don't use any firewalls/anti-virus "but I also don't download from unreliable sources and I use Firefox so it's a non-issue and I have never had any trouble or gotten any ads/spyware/etc.

The only thing I did NOT do was install it to a separate folder so I guess I'll give that a shot, oh and for my specs...

It's not an amazing computer by any means but It should easily play the game even with a 2007 model integrated graphics card.

The computers model number is sr5413wm and it is in vanilla condition.

Overall I have never had trouble playing similar games with similar requirements so I can't see why it would be a problem, anyways thanks for writing me.

You are right, your computer should run this game easily. My only concern is the video card. Integrated cards seem to have trouble running some games it seems.

I am pressed for time at the moment and will try to look further into your problem later this evening. I would suggest you install in a directory outside of program files. I use C:\Games for my Vista / Win 7 installs as UAC can block read / write attempts in the Program Files installs.

First backup any saves you have,if any, and delete the game using the uninstall in the GOG menu the game created. Delete any folders / files left after the uninstall in the original GOG install. Usually C\:Program Files\GOG.com\Divine Divinity.

Turn UAC off prior to re-installing, right-click the setup.exe and click "Run this program as an administrator" in the resulting dialog. On the first dialog of the GOG installer, click the Options button on the lower left corner and point the install to your new directory. After installing, right click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark "Run this program as an administrator". I also check "Disable desktop composition" and "Disable visual themes".

Your default Windows firewall should be running unless you turned it off. If the game is still slow after the reinstall go to the Control Panel, click the Windows Firewall and add the div.exe as a trusted program. I use Comodo so I'm not sure of the exact steps but it should not be too hard.

Most rigs run DD great on install but . . . there seems to be a few configurations that don't run it properly. Post back your results if you would . . . =)

Okay, after doing everything you mentioned and installing it into a new directory the game lag was reduced by around 15-20% and the mouse lag is gone, so it did help. It is still very laggy though and not really playable, hmmm idk what to do anymore lol, thanks for the tips though.

You're welcome, sorry it gave no joy. I was thinking, the old config tool usually fixes the lag problem. When you ran the old config tool did you right click the exe and click "Run as an administrator" in the resulting dialog or did you just double click the exe to run it?

If you did not run the tool as an admin you might try it again. Setting the rendering to DirectDraw is the usual fix.

Also, when playing the game try pressing the R key to toggle run to on / off. I can't say it would be a fix but the characters move fairly slow unless you toggle on the "always run" mode.
