I'm early in the game in the first dungeon where the orcs are looking for slasher. I'd like to attack one of the weaker orcs (not the leader) but don't get the option when initiating dialogue, nor am I aware of any way to force-attack an NPC like in the Baldur's gate games. Can this be done in Divine Divinity?

To the best of my knowledge there is no way to attack a non-hostile NPC. The mini-map is the best way to determine who is and who is not hostile. All hostiles will show as a red dot with all peaceful NPC showing up as a green dot.
I believe you could have turned the Orcs hostile prior to accepting the quest for the slasher but . . . I always accept the quest and have not tried to make them hostile. At that stage of the game you would quickly be killed by five Orcs. . . =)
The one key that does come close is holding the CTRL while being attacked by a group of hostiles. As long as you have the CTRL key pressed your character will automatically attack the closest enemy until they are wiped out or he dies. The draw back is you cannot drink potions while the CTRL key is pressed and you cannot run away. Learned that the hard way . . . =)
Unless you've played through before, it's generally not a good idea to attack random NPCs, especially in a game like DD.
In the situation you've mentioned, finding Slasher and giving it to Smiruk can cause the game to hang if there are no other orcs in the area - and this happens whether they're killed by you, or beasties, or if they just wander off.
You might only attack one, but if anything happens to the rest, you're screwed regardless.

You're welcome, DD is great fun and I find myself returning for another game often. It's one of the most relaxing and fun RPG's that I've found . . . =)
