Before I start another game, if the GOG version is updated, would save games be compatible or not?
Yes, you should be able to continue with your existing saves if the GOG version is updated. I have not had any problems loading disk or GOG saves in the 1.006A version of the game. I also didn't have problems with the couple disk saves I loaded in the GOG version (some people reported a crash trying to load disk saves, or them loading but saving being disabled after that). Since there were reports of compatibility problems with the GOG version, though, they did check that more thoroughly with the new version.
Would it be difficult for Gog to include the base, unpatched version of the game as a bonus download, allowing those interested to patch it themselves to the version they want? That's what I would want if I didn't already have the cd version.

Original unpatched version of the game (1.0029A) utilises Safedisc v2.70.030 copy protection which then changed few times by official game patches released:
Divine Divinity Hotfix (1.0031A) - Safedisc v2.80.010
Divine Divinity Hotfix 2 (1.0032A) - Safedisc v2.80.010
Divine Divinity 1st Official Patch (1.0033A) - Safedisc v2.90.040
Divine Divinity 2nd Official Patch (1.0034A) - copy protection removed but CD3 is still needed to play.
It is against the GoG politics to include copy protected content (cloned CD images) as bonus download I think.

This is true.
Plus, I would be surprised that Larian would authorize distribution of an unpatched version of the game since they have invested much effort to correct many issues. It wouldn't look too good no matter how forgiving the customer may be. And it appears that Larian has a lot of pride in their work.
This thread is really confusing. Which one of these two statements is true as of Aug 8, 2012?

a) Larian is investigating the possibility of bringing the version released on Steam to GOG

b) Larian already investigated the possibility of bringing the version released on Steam to GOG and for whatever reason (good or bad, but presumably good) decided not to.
Larian is sill working on an update for the Steam version, and has yet to announce any issues that would prevent them from releasing that patched version through GOG (presumably they would look at that when getting close to finalizing the update).

Larian was off for 2 weeks the end of July, and this week are quite busy getting ready for Gamescom next week, so a GOG update probably isn't imminent.

Thanks, mate! Appreciate the update!
OH MAN!!!

Dammit I should've read this thread before I just spent 20 hours playing this game.

I swear GOG is getting BAD about selling games that are somehow incomplete. This one might be the straw that broke the camels back for me though as I spent an incredible amount of time playing this yesterday and today, and now discover bugs that were once fixed aren't fixed on this version and the soundtrack is light.

I just posted a thread about how much I loved GOG, and now this. There were things missing/patch missing with Betrayal at Antara and AT LEAST three more recently that my memory just can't recall.

Come on GOG. If you're going to sell a game that is NOT the latest version or is missing something, INDICATE THAT ON THE GAME CARD BEFORE WE PURCHASE!!

Fuck, over 20 damned hours in this thing!!

Can't start a new post so:

Does anyone know if I can download the Steam version since I purchased it here??

I know Steam allows us to register non-Steam games there, was just wondering if I registered this one there, maybe then they would let me download their version?

Apparently their version is patched and includes all the soundtrack, right???

This is SOOOOOOOO FRUSTRATING GOG. Come on. Stuff like this happens, but the info about such things should be included with the game card before purchase so that people know what they're getting.

There isn't a huge difference between the GOG and Steam versions of DD. Larian re-did the widescreen support and Win7 compatibility updates, but other issues remain (for example, some people have reported the same music issues, to various degrees).

Larian is looking at all the reported issues with both versions, and has stated they will release the latest version on GOG if there are no issues doing so. Presumably when there is a patch for the Steam / Larian Vault release they will look at bringing that updated version to GOG.

There is a Divinity game collection planned for October, promoted at Gamescom, but no details have been announced yet, AFAIK (see Gamescom 2012). Larian hasn't confirmed any patch details for DD, but presumably they would want to get that done before the anthology goes gold, so hopefully there will be an update for the GOG version of DD before or around that release.
I edited the original post to reflect Larian's clarification/change of mind but I can't see how to change the thread title.
I doubt that the changes introduced by official 1.33 patch (1.0033A) for retail game release will eventually be implemented in Steam/GoG releases. Although I don't understand why Larian don't just adapt the existing patch for these releases...
I still have the boxed version of this game. And presumably the patches (1.033A and 1.034A) are available on these intertoobz somewhere.

Can I patch the GOG version to 1.034A and if it does a disk check I can put my disk in there??

Asking if anyone knows if this is doable BEFORE I spend an hour or two finding the patches, installing the patches, and finding my disks (Yes, I'm sure they're here, I just have to find them).

ADDED IN EDIT:

I just found the patches, and now I'm cofused. If the GOG version does not include fixes that were made in previous patches, which version is the GOG release? Is it 1.033A and therefore didn't include the 1.034A patch, or is it the 1.032A, and didn't include the 1.033A and 1.034A patches, or some version even earlier??

I ask because as far as I can tell I can live without version 1.034A. But 1.033A has quite a lot of bug fixes that would be nice. If this GOG version is basically 1.033A and only missing the 1.034A patch and some of the soundtrack, then I can live with this and will continue my game.

Still though GOG, this is the kind of thing that should be inluded on the game card, and let people know what they're getting and then decide.

Latest official patch 1.34 can be downloaded from Larian website: http://www.larian.com/Site/fix/DivPatch_English.exe
I am sure if you still have retail (3CD) game release you can install this patch. Even if this patch throw an error message during the installation process (registry entries not found... reinstall... blah-blah-blah) you can simply unrar this patch into the game installation folder (patch represents a simply self-extracting RAR archive). Your savegames should be compatible with this patch. However if you'll find and install the older 1.33 patch then you'll have to start a new game (savegames from another versions are incompatible with 1.33!).

The GoG shows 1.005A as game version but actually is almost identical to 1.0029A (1.29) retail version with few more bugs introduced (soundtrack playback problem, some half-working changes to config tool for HD monitor support).

You can not install the disk version patches on the GOG game. Some people have reported compatibility problems loading disk saves in the GOG game (crashing or saving being disabled after loading), and one person reported crashes in Verdistis using a Steam version save in the disk version of the game.

Some of the 1.33 fixes are in the GOG version, some are not. See what are the problems with gog's Divine Divinity?
