Purchased Divine Divinity a week ago. Installed fine went to launch it. Game asks me about my preferences I choose what resolution I want. Screen goes black as if to launch then a box that tells me divine divinity has stopped working pops up. It's the standard program has stopped working windows box.

I searched the forums about anything and everything that could be wrong with the game.
I turned the UAC off. Ran every compatibility setting and resolution. Ran as Administrator. Tried the old Configuration tool tried it on directdraw, and every other option to no success. Manually changed the resolution in Note pad. Updated all my drivers.

My system is a AMD Phenom II 945 Quad core, Windows 7 64 bit, ATI Radeon HD 5450. My monitor is also a wide screen and I have had trouble with other games due to the wide screen. The default resolution on it is 1920x1080. I honestly have no idea what to do next. Any suggestions on things that have worked for you would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to figure it out if it is a problem with Windows 7, my graphics card, my monitor, or my processor.

Are you starting the game from a shortcut located on the desktop? If so, try using the shortcut located in the GOG.com, Divine Divinity game folder located in the Programs menu. (Start, Programs, GOG.com,Divine Divinity, Divine Divinity shortcut) Use it in the menu, don't copy it to the desktop to try it. Right click the shortcut, click Properties and click on the Compatibility tab, check mark "Run this program as an administrator" before trying it.

If that doesn't do the trick, let me know and we will try some other things if this gives no joy.

I am assuming you have NOT set the game shortcut to run in "windowed" mode ( DD does not run in this mode ), that you have tried different compatibility modes in the game shortcut and have tried setting the game to start with some standard resolutions (ie 800 x 600 or 1280 x 1024).

I would disconnect from the internet and disable / close my firewall and anti-virus. If the game starts, enable / start the AV (usually it is the firewall that blocks a game) and try it. If it still starts, enable / start the firewall. If it won't start then you will need to make the div.exe an exception or trusted program in the firewall rules. If it is the AV program that stops the game from running you would need to make the div.exe trusted in the AV program.

Comodo is especially known to block games. It will throw up an "Allow this" dialog but it will be behind the game screen so you never see it. Closing / crashing the game causes Comodo (and other firewalls) to close the very dialog you would need to check mark in order for the game to run. If the game doesn't crash you can sometimes ALT-TAB out and check the "Allow this" box, this fixed the problem of DD not starting for me. . . =)

If the game still won't start with both disabled then re-enable both and re-connect your internet cable. I would then do the following:

-Uninstall the program then delete any Divine Divinity files / directories under Program Files or Program Files(x64)\GOG.com\.
-Disable UAC and reboot
-Create a directory on C drive (NOT in the Program Files directory, I use one called "Games") This seems to be especially necessary with Win 7 64.
-Right click the DD setup.exe and click "Run as an administrator" in the resulting dialog
-On the first dialog of the GOG installer, click the Options button on the lower left corner and point the install to the Games directory
-After install, right click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark "Run this program as an administrator"
-Try running the game.
- If it runs, re-enable UAC, reboot and try it again.

I would also suggest sitting the CPU affinity to a single core but that would be the next step and requires you to download a free program called RunFirst I recommend that because it's free, it works and it's the only way I know to set the affinity BEFORE the game starts and without going through a long manual process to set affinity. It is used mostly to stop a sound static problem in DD but some games, new and old, run better on a single core. It sets the affinity when the game starts and sets it back when the game closes.

If the game still won't run you may need to try limiting the memory. I don't like this solution as it has to be done every time you play the game and undone when you close the game, still . . . it's the only thing that works on some systems. Make a note of your current setting BEFORE you change it as you will need to set it back when you close the game. 2048 seems to be the magic number for most systems. ( See attached image ) I don't have other suggestions if these don't work . . . =)

I would also make a help ticket with GOG support.
