Hi all--

I bought Divinity II: Developer's Cut recently. I'm trying running it on Windows 10 and while the animated scenes are smooth and lovely, as soon as I'm controlling the mouse, it is INCREDIBLY choppy. Unplayable, not just annoying. I can barely even get through the three options in character creation.

I've seen all sorts of topics on this when I try to research the problem, but pretty much all of them are from 2014-2016 era and none have worked. Some solutions reference NVIDIA options that no longer even exist, so I feel like I'm wasting my time at this point. I was wondering if anyone on here had encountered the problem in the Windows 10 era and had found a solution? Appreciate any insight!

blytheandbonnie: Some solutions reference NVIDIA options that no longer even exist
About a year ago Nvidia changed the Max Pre-Rendered Frames setting to an 'Ultra-Low Latency Mode' and simplified the options (off, on or ultra).

Try the 4GB Patch to increase the amount of virtual memory that the game (or any 32 bit application) can access in 64 bit versions of Windows.

Did lowering the game resolution, or other troubleshooting, affect the severity of the lag?

It sounds like you may have already tried most of the usual suggestions, but just in case:

In the Graphics options, check the 'Show Advanced options' box, then scroll down to the bottom and enable Lockstep Mode (just above the FPS Cap slider), or uncheck the Use Multicore option, to see if that makes a difference.

In the graphics options, try setting Distance Rendering to low and enabling time slice shadows.

Try exiting out Galaxy, if applicable, and starting the game directly from the '..\Divinity II - Developers Cut\bin' folder: Divinity2.exe is the normal mode, while Divinity2-debug.exe has the optional 'Developer Mode' cheat menu. Right click the executable and run as administrator.

Try right clicking the game executables, select Properties, switch to the Compatibility tab and in Win 10 check 'Override high DPI scaling behavior' (set it to Application), or in Win 7, check off the option to 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings'. Also check the option to run as administrator, and try different compatibility modes, or in Win 10 disable fullscreen optimizations.

You can try switching to windowed mode (unsupported) by editing the file below in a text editor, and changing the one to a zero in Fullscreen="1".
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Divinity 2\Profile\graphicoptions.xml

Copy the following line into the location field in Windows Explorer for a quick way to get to that folder.
%LocalAppData%\Divinity 2\Profile

To browse there, you may need to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders (covers Vista through Win 10).

Try doing a clean boot and then test the game. Click Start, or hit WinKey-R, type in msconfig and hit enter; in the General tab, click Selective Startup, uncheck Load startup items (if required) and leave Load system services and Use original boot configuration options checked. Next, click on the Services tab, check the box to Hide all Microsoft services, then click the Disable All button (maybe make a note of which are currently enabled/disabled), then click OK and reboot the computer.
Run msconfig again to switch back to the normal boot configuration.

And some topics you may have already found:

Very low fps in every graphics configuration

60fps but extreamly laggy? please help

cant get over 7fps

60 choppy stuttery any fix ?

Stuttering animations and overall poor performance.

and for D2:ED:

Choppy game - possible fix

For people with stuttering graphics

i think i finally found what the problem was and an easy fix for a 4k ultra settings 30fps smoother gameplay
i will post it in a few days because i need to make some test first
till then what i say is that i think the game and nvidia drivers don't sync with each other and thus the stutters occur, as for the fps well i think the game engine can give only 44 fps max but i may be wrong and further testing is needed

see you all soon in some days with the info
finally we got it working at least at smooth 30fps ^_< /
after tests and tests i think the game engine can only deliver 44 ish fps

so for example to get it work smooth you need to do this

Yeah, no matter what I do, I can't get this thing running at a steady framerate. The animations are fine, but the world/camera panning are insanely choppy. Even if I fully unlock the framerate and am getting a readout of nearly 300fps, the world is choppy. No combination of vsync on-off/framrate/predrendered frames anything gets rid of it. tried all the fixes listed above, nothing gets it a steady 60.

3060ti/10600/16gb Ram
Curious: for those w/ NVidia, have you instead tried using FastSync?

EDIT:
Checked PC Gaming Wiki - https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Divinity_II:_Developer%27s_Cut

Looks like a solution is to limit the FPS to 55fps.

I can 100% confirm that on my new build with win 10 fully updated 09/01/2021 with a msi rx5500xt fully updated that stutter is finally gone.
now it takes limiting frame frate with msi afterburner and rivatunerstatisticsServer (both downloaded 08/30/2021)
you have to disable vsync in game and set 30 fps in rivatuner.

i have been waiting a long time to finally play this game. the stutter game me migranes.

Program settings in NVIDIA:

Low Latency mode: ULTRA
Max Frame Rate: 55
Threaded Optimization: OFF

This was like a magic bullet for me, also disabling HDR helped a lot. RTX-2070 with a Ryzen 2600 and this was the settings that removed the stuttering and hitching.
also we can try set up the refresh rate of the monitor from 60Hz to 50Hz and activate vsync but its not tested
it also seems to fix some unity games stutter problems

I found this, maybe it can be useful
Found a FIX for the choppy CAMERA !

Edit: I tested it and it worked! It solved my problem with the stuttering. Remember to download the latest version (0.97 at the time of this post)
