I am getting a crash when I try to load a module (even the main module) with the Divinity Engine. I checked the log.txt file in my The Divinity Engine folder. The error is:

* Missing language.lsx file in 'C:\Games\Gog\Divinity Series\Data\Localization\language.lsx'

However, the game's data folder is:

* C:\Games\Gog\Divinity Series\Divinity - Original Sin\Data

I double-checked the path was correct in the Editor's preferences. For some reason, the game's folder name is removed from the path. I've done some more testing and it doesn't matter where I install the editor or game, I get the same error when I try to load any module into the editor. It always strips out the name of the folder the game is installed to. For example, I currently have the game installed to D:\Temp\DOS and the error shows it's looking in D:\Temp\Data for the game's files.

I'm using the latest version of the game (1.0.169) and the latest editor available on GOG (GOG installer version 2.4.0.11). Here's my Editor Path and Game Data Path as shown in the Preferences:

D:\Temp\DOS\Data\Editor -- Editor Path
D:\Temp\DOS\Data -- Game Data Path

Any idea if I'm doing something wrong? Is there a newer version of the editor? Help? =)

It may be that you have the editor installed inside the game's 'data' folder structure -- it may be throwing the editor off. For example, I have the Steam version which loads modules perfectly. My paths are:

C:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\The Divinity Engine\
C:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\

Hmm, so after re-installing, I changed the paths to:

GameDataPath: C:\Games\Gog\Divinity Series\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\
EditorDataPath: C:\Games\Gog\Divinity Series\The Divinity Engine\

Crash when loading the module. Error shows it's looking for language.lsx in C:\Games\Gog\Divinity Series\Data\Localization. So it's still stripping the game's folder name out of the path.

That's really odd, because the Steam version also has a log entry that suggests a missing localisation file because of a bad path, although the module (tutorial in this case) does load, and the editor warns about it, and asks user to add it in the editor. Log entry:

Missing language.lsx file in 'C:/Games/Steam/steamapps/common/Data/Localization/language.lsx'

It looks like a bug. Maybe Raze will know more on this?

That's what I'm hoping. I have a similar post over on the Larian forums. Creating a new module causes a crash with the same error in the log file as well. It's when the engine is initializing. It looks like it nearly completes loading then AppCrash:

Hi, Raze.

So I set the EditorDataPath back to C:\Games\Gog\Divinity Series\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\Editor\. I still get an AppCrash with the same data as above when I attempt to create or load a module. The top progress bar gets to about 95% - 97% filled before the crash. I've re-downloaded the game and Divinity Engine files from GOG to make sure everything is up to date. Any ideas?

If needed, the laptop I'm trying this on has the following specs:

* AMD A10-5757M 2.5 GHz (quad-core)
* Radeon HD 8650G (512 MB integrated) + Radeon HD 8750M (2 GB dedicated) dual graphics
* Catalyst 14.4 drivers
* 12 GB memory

Edit: I did check Catalyst and TheDivinityEngine.exe is set to use the HD 8750M.

I'll have to try this on my desktop tonight, but I believe I'm getting a similar error there as well.

I think I may have found part of the problem. Looking in the file log.xml, the last line reads something like:

* ..\..\..\..\..\LSFramework\Code.CoreLib\FileFormatIO.cpp 29 ls::FileFormatIO::LoadFile Visiting of file [C:/Games/Gog/Divinity Series/Divinity - Original Sin/Data/Public/Main/Assets/Materials/Effects/FX_MP_Blood_Dissolve_A.lsb] has failed!

So, I looked into the folder and the only subfolder in Data\Public\Main\Assets is Sound. There are no other files. So, I seem to be missing some (most?) files in this folder. I would assume the Steam copy includes these files, but the GOG copy doesn't? Or am I missing some steps somewhere in setting up The Divinity Engine outside of Steam? I haven't been able to find a Getting Started tutorial for Divinity Engine that isn't based on the Steam version.

Those folders do not exist in the Steam version, either.

I have the game and editor set up outside of Steam -- don't like Steam running when there's no need -- and it is nothing more than a complete copy/paste into another location. That's it. No setting up. No configuring. Just... copy/paste the entire (11 GB) game and/or editor folder structure. Oh, and create separate shortcuts that don't launch Steam.

Just curious - what's the date and size on your GameEngine.dll file in your The Divinity Engine folder. Mine is dated Aug. 11, 2014 and has a file size 2.43 MB. That's the library that is crashing when I try to open or create a module.

The date is irrelevant, since downloading, moving and/or copying will change it. The size, as reported by Windows Explorer, is 2.46 MB (2,588,672 bytes).

Sounds like your file is a little larger than mine. The modified date on mine is Aug. 11, but the created date is Sept. 19th as that's when I re-installed the editor.

However, I can see where in your case it would be irrelevant as you moved your folder after installing which would indeed change the Modified Date field. It was worth a try anyway. It still sounds like you may have a slightly different version of the file than I do.

Just wanted to say that the most recent version of The Divinity Engine (GOG version 2.7.0.13) works just fine with D:OS 1.0.219. Thanks to everyone that posted suggestions. =)

And, unfortunately, now that the latest patch is out (1.0.252) the editor (GOG installer version 2.7.0.13) now gives me a repeating error at launch -- "Attempted to read or write protected memory."

I've looked up a number of solutions online, but unfortunately I can't seem to resolve the problem. =(
