Every time I launch it, it gives me the Larian logo screen, then a screen with like the game engine and copyright stuff at the bottom. Then there's a black screen with a spinning logo in the bottom right (loading screen?) and it suddenly closes out and crashes to desktop. It does this every time.

Does anyone know what might be causing this and how to fix it? I should point out that I'm a bit of a computard, so you may have to speak to me like your grandparents...

What system are you using? First of all try to disable any unnecessary programs running in the background, especially antivirus and firewall. Then try to run the game in compatibility mode. To do this right click on the games shortcut, choose Properties and click on the Compatibility tab. Check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" box and select the desired option. Be sure to try Windows 7 and Windows XP.

If it doesn't help you might consider renaming intro.wmv and loading.wmv files found in "GameFolder\Data\Video" folder.

The game can also have problems with Nvidia PhysX if you're using an Nvidia graphics card. You can try to solve this by uninstalling PhysX driver from your computer, rebooting it and using the version provided with the game. You can find it in the support folder. It wouldn't hurt to install Microsoft Visual C++ and DirectX 9 as well. They're in the same folder.

And if you have installed in c:\program files\... you should reinstall somewhere else.

I believe it is a PhysX issue and had to install Nvidia PhysX System Software 9.17.0524 for the game to work. I tried everything and nothing worked until i installed this.

Hi, I have the same problem, I tried with all the suggested solutions (win7 compatibility, disable desktop composition, run as administrator) without success. I also tried to download the Nvidia PhysX System Software 9.17.0524 version, but I couldn't install it because it found a newer one already installed.
I installed the game through gog galaxy, which keeps it up to date, but I never managed to get past the second screen, the one with copyright.
Any other suggestions?

If you check the Event Viewer, does that give an error code or 'Faulting Module' file name that might help identify the cause of the crash?
- click Start (or WinKey-R), then type "event viewer" into the search box. in Windows 10, 'event' should bring up 'View event logs'.

- in the center column, look for a recent error (maybe sort by Date and Time) for the game
- check the information under the 'General' tab below the list of events, starting with "Faulting application name..."

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game? Firewalls have also caused conflicts.

Try renaming the intro.wmv and loading.wmv videos in the '..\Divinity II - Developers Cut\Data\Video' folder. That may avoid a startup crash.

When starting the game from the executable, did you try Divinity2.exe (normal mode) and Divinity2-debug.exe (with the optional 'Developer Mode' cheat menu)?

Try the 4GB Patch to increase the amount of virtual memory that the game (or any 32 bit application) can access in 64 bit versions of Windows. That can also help with startup crashes.

You could try uninstalling the latest version of PhysX and rebooting, then install the version that comes with the game. If that gets it to start, you would probably be able to update the the latest version of PhysX again, if you need it for other games.


You could try setting a lower game resolution manually by editing the file below in a text editor, and/or put the game into windowed mode (unsupported) by changing the one to a zero in Fullscreen="1".
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Divinity 2\Profile\graphicoptions.xml

The easiest way to get to that folder would probably be to copy the following into the location bar in Windows Explorer.

hi, I solved.
I renamed the .wmv and saw the menu, but it crashed when I started the first new game. It didn't help to disable antivirus and firewall, disable desktop composition or win7 compatibility. Then I changed graphicoptions.xml - Fullscreen "0" and finally the game started in the window. Many thanks for the suggestions

OT: Is there a way to enlarge the fonts?

Man you are amazing, your tip with renaming the intro and loading helped :O I cant beliave it, I tried so many things with Physx and resolution, and this was the problem all along. Thank you VERY MUCH !!

It doesn't matter what you change them to. example: no_intro.wmv & no_loading.wmv
It's just so the program can't find them, and skips them.

I have to join in here.

I think it's a laptop problem. Two graphics cards. Intel and Nvidea. On another laptop (a little older) it starts up clean. With a newer one, only the screen flickers and then the program quits. I've tried all the tips but nothing helped. It seems to be an Intel - nvidea switching problem on the laptop. The other laptop it's running on also has the latest driver and it's running. Anyone ever found a solution?

if larian reads along here .. please recomile for current systems.. the game is great!!! ;-)
