When my Divine Divinity-installation was nearly complete, I was asked if I wanted to repair or uninstiall Microsoft Visuals C++. I chose to repair it to the 2008-state as that was the only sensible option for me.

Then I tried to test out Baldur's Gate afterwards, but when I exited, all by desktop-icons had been "neatly" thrown together without my knowing - don't know why that is, I had organised them all, but now they are just scattered alongside each other to the left.

Has the installation messed something up on my PC?

UPDATE: This is REALLY strange... every time I organise my games on the desktop in the order I want to play them and then start up and exit a game, the icons return to the top-left side in a big pile :S :S :S

I have windows 10, the game can start, but apparently it can't officially run on 10 according to the GOG-game-page.

Some games with lower resolution do that don't know why,i also have to reorganize them sometimes dependable on the game, don't think you messed up anyting on your pc.
This is just that the game is adjusting the monitor resolution but instead of only doing it in the game it also adjusts your icons because the resolution is too small for that many icons.
A program like DesktopOK can save and restore the layout of your desktop icons.
But that's exactly it... I CAN'T organise them anymore... first of all, they don't "click" into a position on the desktop-grid, I can put them anywhere, but they are automatically regrouped to the left side afterwards.

Argh, I should never have installed the game: I think it's because I downgraded Microsoft Visuals C++ from 2012-version to 2008-version, but I can't say for sure.

I am worried that my other games that require a newer version of MVC dont work.

Although I just tested Witcher 2, and that worked OK.

Bearprint: they are automatically regrouped to the left side afterwards.
Right click an open area of your desktop, and check the View menu (may be slightly different in Win 10; I'm using 7 still): is 'Auto arrange icons' checked off and 'Align icons to grid' unchecked?

You didn't downgrade. It is normal to have multiple versions of the MS VC redistributables installed, as well as multiple versions of the same year.
That fixed the problem that they don't "click" into position, but they still get put over to the left side when I start up a game.

I tried restoring icon cache and changing resolution (which was not possible, apparently a low resolution is not present in Win 10), so I dont really know what to do.

It's not a PC-destroying problem - I put the games into folders now to at least get SOME level of organisation - but it is very annoying regardless.

Had that happen with Beyond Divinity on Win 7, and from the Anthology, not the version here (though it may be the same?). It seemed to mess up the desktop after playing it every time. Nothing to do with the VC I'd say, just really messy code in setting the game's visual settings probably.

Edit: Here was my topic on the Larian forums about it. Problem didn't appear upon exiting the game, but upon rebooting after exiting the game, and apparently graphics drivers were left in an "invalid state" according to logs. May want to check system logs for the same thing.

I think I found the problem now.

I changed my resolution to a level below the recommended level, and that seemed to allow me to go back to normal (I could move the icons around again.)

However, that resolution looks ugly, so the problem is still not entirely fixed, and if I revert back to the top-resolution, the problem still persists.

Half-done I guess.

UPDATE: I restarted the PC... turns out the resolution-thing did nothing :( I also uninstalled the game, but to no avail.

WOW, this is frustrating. Please fix this issue for future buyers, GOG. Cavalary, how did you repair the problem?

I didn't, just didn't play BD anymore. Though the workaround I had found then was to change the resolution after exiting the game. What I recall as clearly working was to change it twice, so after quitting first change it to something less than 1280x1024 (that being the normal one for me) and then back to that, as that will replace whatever invalid state the game leaves it in. Alternately, at least according to what I wrote there, seemed that playing another game after BD did the same thing. But, again, in my case the problem only appeared after rebooting after playing, not immediately, so if for you it happens right away this won't work in preventing it from happening :/
Nothing works :(
Well you could put all your desktop items in a single folder and check them through the folder then. This means your desktop will only contain one folder with all your icons inside.
Not a proper solution but it's worth to try.
