Hi. I bought Divine Divinity a couple of days ago, and have attempted to play it, but it runs very slow and clunky. Moving around feels like I'm watching a turtle crawl to its death...IT'S REALLY SLOW!!
I should have no problem running the game, since it's from 2002, my OS is Vista...3GB of Ram, x2 Dual Core Processor 5600 + (2 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Anyone..help?
This question / problem has been solved by Stuffimage
You might try right clicking the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, select the compatibility mode for Win 98 / Win Me and check mark "Run this program as an administrator" first. See attached image . . . =)
Did you install the game as an administrator? Are your video drivers up to date?

Yep, installed it as an administrator, and checked both of the boxes on the picture..Nothing changed. That music is so glorious and makes me want to play the game...but! Ah!
The drivers are up to date as well, yes.

You also tried the compatibility mode in other modes besides Win 98 / Win ME?
The slow problem seems to pop up on certain systems from time to time without a real single solution being found. I found that I needed to ALT-TAB out of the game start screen and OK some run permissions for my firewall (Comodo), It would close the request when I closed the game so I could never see the request without ALT-Tabbing out.
Some folks have fixed the problem by backing up their saves, uninstalling the game and reinstalling in a directory outside of Program Files. Seems UAC directory security can block access to hardware for a game installed there. You might try turning UAC off and trying some game play, if the problem is gone then installing outside of the Program Files directory is probably a solution.
Using the AMD Dual Core Optimizer may help some graphics problems (I believe you are running AMD?) It helped me with some stutter problems on my laptop.
You can set the affinity to one core manually, if that helps with the problem try using RunFirst to set it automagically for the game without doing it manually. I use it on my install and it works well. I didn't have any problems, I just wanted to try it out before I recommended it . . . just left it after setting it up.
Some folks have solved the problem using the old DD configtool.exe to set rendering to DirectDraw instead of Direct3D See this thread. You will see an early post in that thread from DeathKnight (a DD developer / programmer) explaining why they removed the option and plainly stating that it is not supported any longer. It is something that you would try at your own risk. It would only affect DD.
This link used to be good for the old configtool.exe Like I said, use at your own risk and some have claimed it fixed their problem.
There is always a chance that I have misunderstood the extent of your slowdown. Pressing the "R" key for always run will speed up your character a lot. Thought I had better add that . . . =)

Aha! Installing it in a created directory helped...I actually did the same thing for Planescape Torment (which unfortunately isn't on GOG :( ) I guess I should just install every old game outside of program files from now on.
THANK YOU!
Ahhh..great. I was too quick to judge. While the game runes at a good speed, after I climb up the ladder, the screen goes black. The toolbars and everything are still there, but I can't see anything in the environment...
I can see this game is going to be nothing but problems!

Glad to hear you got it working ! You're gonna have a great time with DD . . . =)
Installing in a directory outside of Program Files is almost a given with Vista and Win 7. Seems the security imposed on the Program Files and sub directories is especially tough on a game install.
Everybody want Planescape Torment on GOG . . . =)

Edit: Move around some since the fog of war will make all but a small area black until you move. Make sure you don't have the CAPS LOCK key on since it will cause the camera to not follow your character.
If you are running at a resolution over 1280 x 1024 . . . the area of light surrounding your character will be VERY small until you widen it with movement. I found it hard to play at a res higher than that since my character was about 1/4 inch tall . . . =)

I have completely solved this issue on my Vista notebook. Here's what I did.
1) I installed DD to a directory outside program files (probably not necessary, just turn UAC off as a substitution). *This step by itself did not help the game run faster, but it did make the installation possible*
2) Download the old config tool. I don't care what the developer says. This fixes it for me.
3) Replace the current config tool with the old one.
4) then change the setting from Direct3D to DirectDraw or Glide.
On direct3D it was 6FPS, Draw was 16 (still unbearable), and last but not least Glide put the game up to 30FPS which makes the game definitely playable. (to find out the FPS just run the test in the old config tool) There is a link to the old config tool earlier in this thread. USE IT!!!

I'm trying to do that..but it keeps giving me "Initialisation of this mode failed" when I try to use Glide or DirectDraw...however, when I pick Software, it works, but FPS is like 75, and the game runs way too fast. And If I delete the new configtool to replace it with the old one, the game won't even launch.

I don't use this method but . . . make sure you set it back to Direct3D with the old tool before deleting it and replacing it with the tool that is supplied with the install.
It may have written over entries in a DD config file which are not valid for your system. I guess its why the developer removed the option . . . to avoid this problem on systems that don't support the other video options.
You may need to uninstall and delete all folders under GOG.com\Divine Divinity . . . and reinstall . . . to get rid of the setting problem. . . . =)
Just wanted to chime in that I have the same problem, and have finally given up after following every piece of advice in this thread, and any others I could find. The game just runs clunky on my machine... (I far exceed the specs with a Pentium 3.2 single core and an Nvidea 7800gs) even waited a few months for a few new driver releases to see if that made a difference, but no luck.
Such a shame, it looks like a really deep game... just what I enjoy.

It is a fun game, sorry you can't get it to run. Make sure you are running the patched version by looking on the start screen in the lower right corner. Should be V1.005A. Some who bought it several months ago did not redownload the setup exe for the patched version before installing.
I believe the 7800GS has 256 MB of onboard memory, you might try turning the video performance options to a lower quality and turn Ztunnel, 3d shadows and fog to off.
Also try some different resolutions using the configtool.exe located in the DD install directory since some systems won't work well with certain resolutions.
What CPU are your running? Is it a dual core? What OS?
Not trying to suggest you retry everything since you have already tried several fixes. Sometimes uninstalling and starting from scratch works. If you do uninstall, make sure you delete any folder / directories remaining in Program Files\GOG.com\Divine Divinity. Especially important to install with UAC off and in a directory outside of Program Files as an admin. Setting the shortcut to run as an admin and then trying some compatibility modes is my last step.
If running AMD CPU there is another fix you could try, also setting the affinity to single core and, if running Vista / Win 7 64, limiting the system memory often clears up some graphics problems.

Stuff: I've uninstalled and reinstalled more times than I can count, each time with slightly different settings. I even played the game in it's slowed form, and enjoyed it, but it pulled me out of the atmosphere of the game too much to play beyond reaching the first city.
My CPU is a Pentium 3.2 single core.
I've tried all the changes you recommended... I even when into my video cards setting and set the quality on everything to either off, or the lowest available. No change at all.
It run "okay" at the lowest resolution, but anything above that has the slowdown. And at the lowest resolution your guy takes up like half the screen... not so playable.
Thanks for your help... hopefully someday something changes, but I just wanted to include my problems so that it's apparent that this is still an ongoing problem for some. I'll update if i get it to work.
Thanks again.

Thanks a lot man for your advice. I had the same problem and the old configtool boosted things up for me. My character turned from a snail into an olympic runner. Btw I also have vista and working with my pc has never been more complicated.
