Hi. I bought Divine Divinity a couple of days ago, and have attempted to play it, but it runs very slow and clunky. Moving around feels like I'm watching a turtle crawl to its death...IT'S REALLY SLOW!!
I should have no problem running the game, since it's from 2002, my OS is Vista...3GB of Ram, x2 Dual Core Processor 5600 + (2 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Anyone..help?

Hello. I think I have a graphics error. When you start a new map (the screen is completely black), no map lights throughout the range of the hero (a circle) but the place where the hero moves. (in line).
What could be the cause?

I believe you are referring to the "Fog of war" effect. All areas that you have not explored are blacked out. As you move your character around the fog of war is removed.

This is to make the game more interesting as you don't know what is ahead until you actually explore the area. The effect also allows you to easily find places you have not explored since they will be blacked out due to you not exploring them yet.

This is a normal screen in DD and not an error.

If moving your character around does not clear the fog of war, post a screen shot of the problem.

Hope this helps . . . =)

Edit: Press the M key to open the mini-map (the A key for the full map, A again to close). The mini-map will give you an overall view of the world / area and also show your enemies as red dots, friendlies as geen dots and your character as a tiny blue x.

Click and hold on the mini-map to move it where it works best for you.

I know about the effect "Fog of war". I finished the game Beyond Divinity.
I mean only that the surface is very little light, and when enemies attack me, they do not notice until they are near me.
To be more explicit I put an image. I hope to see.

It looks like you need to invest a point in Elven Sight or Rangers Sight. Having these skills increases the distance you can see enemies, especially the Ranger Sight skill. I usually invest one or two points but never 5 as there are other skills I find more useful.

The image you posted looks normal but maybe a little dark. You can press ESC, Option, Video, Visual and adjust the Gamma or Darkness to make the game brighter.

The red arrows are indicating you can level up so you might chose one of the above skills. . . =)

Edit: Enemies should appear as red dots on the mini-map even before you can see them on screen near you.

Ok. Thanks for all the information. A wonderful day.

You're welcome.

I see you fighting bare handed? Are you not finding any weapons? . . . =)

When you first start a game in DD it is not always apparent that the buttons at the top of the inventory window are actually buttons. Press the I key to see what I mean. They will allow you to equip weapons and armor directly from inventory by opening your equipment window (second button, bottom right) and dragging the weapon over.

The hero has broken weapon. You have to fix. :))
However they are only the beginning of the game. The image is from the Ferol - Catacombs - Level 4. : D
I think I have much to play:)): D

Stuff: You also tried the compatibility mode in other modes besides Win 98 / Win ME?

The slow problem seems to pop up on certain systems from time to time without a real single solution being found. I found that I needed to ALT-TAB out of the game start screen and OK some run permissions for my firewall (Comodo), It would close the request when I closed the game so I could never see the request without ALT-Tabbing out.

Some folks have fixed the problem by backing up their saves, uninstalling the game and reinstalling in a directory outside of Program Files. Seems UAC directory security can block access to hardware for a game installed there. You might try turning UAC off and trying some game play, if the problem is gone then installing outside of the Program Files directory is probably a solution.

Using the AMD Dual Core Optimizer may help some graphics problems (I believe you are running AMD?) It helped me with some stutter problems on my laptop.

You can set the affinity to one core manually, if that helps with the problem try using RunFirst to set it automagically for the game without doing it manually. I use it on my install and it works well. I didn't have any problems, I just wanted to try it out before I recommended it . . . just left it after setting it up.

Some folks have solved the problem using the old DD configtool.exe to set rendering to DirectDraw instead of Direct3D See this thread. You will see an early post in that thread from DeathKnight (a DD developer / programmer) explaining why they removed the option and plainly stating that it is not supported any longer. It is something that you would try at your own risk. It would only affect DD.
This link used to be good for the old configtool.exe Like I said, use at your own risk and some have claimed it fixed their problem.

There is always a chance that I have misunderstood the extent of your slowdown. Pressing the "R" key for always run will speed up your character a lot. Thought I had better add that . . . =)
I was having trouble with various DD performance issues, and thanks to your amazingly helpful feedback to other's questions, I seem to have fixed it. Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the amount of help you've been, even though you didn't know it :3. +1

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback. I really enjoyed DD. I hope you have as much fun with it as I did / do . . . =)
Thanks, switching to DirectDraw solved the problem for me too.

Hello.

I am sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but I guess it might be better then start a new one for the same purpose.

I've too have problems with this game using Direct3D render using very high end PC like i7-4770k and GTX660. Switching to Software renderer proved very successful and the game runs very smooth, despite the one person who said it runs like crazy rabbit.

However I have a question. Reading through the all suggestions you've mentioned an old config file that allows switching to DirectDraw renderer. I've downloaded it but in the options the max resolution I can use is 1024x768. Now this isn't what the GoG version is for. Is it possible to try to switch to DD and still keep the 1920x1080 resolution ?

Yes, it is possible. You should manually edit config.div file (look for this file in the main game folder with game executable - div.exe). Look at the first two options in this file:
// display width
width 1920

// display height
height 1080

Save the file after editing and run the game.

This game sucks or is weird. It runs fast as anything on my windows xp with decent stuff, yet my brand new windows 8 it runs slow as shit. From what I played of it, its crap anyway. No story just more diablo 2 boredom.
