If you are running Vista / Win 7 . . .
You should have installed by right clicking the setup.exe and clicking "Run as an administrator" from the resulting dialog. You should have right clicked the game short cut, clicked properties, clicked the Compatibility tab and checked "Run this program as an administrator". If running Win 7, also make sure "Run in compatibility mode for" is unchecked.
If you did the above and get the same results then uninstall and reinstall in a directory outside of Program Files doing as described above. Make sure you delete all DD directories under GOG.com\Divine Divinity before reinstalling.
Edit: If you install in a directory outside of Program Files, after right clicking the setup.exe, clicking "Run as an Administrator", click the Options button on the lower left corner of the GOG installer to point the install to the new directory. I suggest something like C:\Games.

Just wanted to say Thanks Stuff!! I had the same problem with Win 7 as above and your solution saved me much heartache. I have also noted that you have been working hard to help others with their rather divine problems (groan). Anyway I just wanted to say keep up the good work and thanks again.

Had o redownload it on Dial up....And didn't get around to installing it until yesterday.
I spent several hours trying to get the game to work.

On an E 6750 with Vista Home Permium 64 bit I can't get passed the error "Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. Setup Aborted
Error 5: Toegang geweigerd."
Toegang geweigerd is Dutch for Acces denied.
There are a lot of mentions of that error message on the net, but I didn't find any useful advice, except perhaps to check for malware and virusses.

On a faulty Athlon XP 2000 running 1 XP Pro and 2 XP Homes. I managed to install it on one of the XP Homes and the game seems to work, but the OS is too unstable. The other XP Home seems stable and installation of the game worked, but it crashes to desktop a few seconds after starting.

Can anyone help ?

I would try to get it running on the Vista system since the other OS seems to have problems all of its own.

I would do the following:

Make sure your user account is an Administrator account. (Control Panel, User Accounts)

If you have it installed on the Vista system, uninstall it and delete any Divine Divinity directories / files under C:\Program Files (xx)\GOG.com\

Create a directory outside of Program Files ( I use C:\Games)

Turn UAC OFF prior to the fresh install. (See attached image)

Right click the setup.exe and click "Run as an administrator" in the resulting dialog.

On the first dialog of the GOG installer, click the Options button in the lower left corner and direct the install to the C:\Games directory. Install.

If you are still getting the "Unable to execute" error, disconnect from the internet and disable your firewall as that is usually the offending program once UAC is turned off. Turn UAC and your firewall back on once the install is complete. ( Also installing outside of Program Files helps eliminate some install errors)

After the install, right click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark the "Run this program as an administrator" box.

I would try the game without a compatibility, if you have problems try the newest compatibility mode first working your way from newest to oldest till you get a stable game.

It is important that you have the latest video drivers as DD does not work well with the older versions.

The steps above have given me stable, playable installs on both Vista 64 and Win 7 64.

If you have a dual / quad core CPU you can also try the following.

If you have static problems there is a program I use to set the affinity to a single core on multicore systems. It is not necessary but helps on SOME systems to do this. You can set it manually first, if that does not help there is no need in using RunFirst

To set it manually, start the game, ALT-TAB out of the game, open task manager (CTRL - ALT - DEL ), find the div.exe on the Processes tab, right click the div.exe name and click Set affinity . . . on the resulting dialog. Un-check all but the CPU 0 check box. (See attached image) Close the task manager and play the game. If this helps I suggest using RunFirst as it sets the affinity for the game without having to go thru the task manager process each time you play.

If you have a dual core AMD CPU you may also get some benefit from the AMD Dual Core Optimizer. This helps some games on systems with the AMD CPU.

Hope this helps . . . =)

Thank you for your quick and elaborate response.

Disabling Comodo Firewall Pro solved the problem.
The game seems to work normally.

Good to hear it's working for you. If you go into Comodo there is a function where you can make the div.exe (located in the DD install folder) a trusted program. This will allow the game to run without endangering your security. . . . =)

Edit: I also use Comodo and the game wouldn't run past the start screen for me. Comodo was poping up "Allow" dialogs behind the game screen. I had to ALT - TAB out of the game to see them. Making the div.exe a trusted program stopped the nagging behind the game screen.
