So in divine divinity there are two major types of book shelves.
The first are the ones that when you hover over them the entire unit highlights and acts as a item chest.
The other type are the ones where each individual shelf can be hovered over and shows as having X number of items on it. This involves the multi shelf ones.

I was doing the reload trick in Aleroth to make the shelves drop some spellbooks for me (so sue me), and once I got the top shelf on one of these multi-shelves ones to spawn a spell, I couldn't make any other shelf on the unit change its contents with reloading.

I very carefully made sure to not click on or hover over any shelf except the top one while doing the reloading, and then saved again once a book spawned. At this point I try reloading to make the other shelves change, but they never do.

Are these multi shelved units considered one whole item for the sake of spawning items? Once I click on any shelf, does it determine loot for all shelves at that point?

No. If you only click on one shelf and don't mouse over any of the others or hit Alt, you should be able to save and reload for the rest. I just double checked that with the bookcase in Joram's house, in the SE corner room upstairs, and got a spell book my first try with the bottom shelf; I quicksaved, the rest were empty, and quickloading twice I got gold and then gold and a random manuscript in the other shelves.
My 2002 system had a minute or two loading time, so I usually only had the patience to try groups of bookcases for spell books.
Thanks for the speedy answer.

So I was either having bad luck, or accidentally hit the shelf with my mouse and didn't notice. Good to know.
