With my level 3 or level 4 Party I find Combat rather challenging.
Since you can reload a lot and save during every turn it's far from unplayable but I searched for the hidden Lab / crazy Golem in the north of the map and ran into the group of Zombie Pigs, skeletal archers and mages and had to try 3 or 4 times before managing to kill them. Madora's Come Back Kid ability saved the day I already saw her dying because because she wasn't regenerating HP fast enough.

2 Mages 1 Witch and one very mad Madora is maybe the wrong party but regenerating Zombie pigs (Their own poisonous bile heals them) are quite bothersome. And I don't have the cool spells the undead mages have while their archers with their special ammunition really hurt too.

So am I missing something or is this supposed to be like that?
It's not that this games offers any grinding XP somewhere, right?

They are level 6 as far i can remember yes you are far too early there with level 3-4 just got north west an do the quests including lighthouse boss. All the way there is thought for level 4. The monsters you met are meant for level 6.
And you are playing with 3 mage characters thats not such a good idea. Ideal parties are jahan, madora, a wizard with fire/witchcraft/earth magic and one rogue or marksman for optimum party

Northwest?
How does someone suppose to know that?
Thanks for the advice!

Obviously the 3 Mages one Fighter Combo might have disadvantages but Mages are just so cooooooll!!!! :D

Just watch the level the monsters have and well yes mages are cool but you need one rogue or marksman with very high perception for all the traps and hidden chests, or you give one mage a very high perception you need until the end of the game at leasts perception 11 or even more just a small hint
SPOILER ALERT

Here are a couple of tips for getting from L3 to L5, in case you missed any of these things:

1. Try leaving town to the east (the gate just southeast of the Legion headquarters). Hunt around carefully and you should find an unoccupied building that can contain some nice loot. It's also a good place to practice using the teleport pyramids and navigating various hazards without risking getting into a fight. Remember, quicksave before opening boxes/chests--- if you really need good armor, and get something less useful, reload and reopen, the loot drop will probably change.

2. Find the mill NE of town, then go talk to the Legion Captain. You have to be a bit careful, but you can get to the mill and back without fighting.

3. Got Perception? There's a dirt pile in the middle of the graveyard (with no tombstone next to it). Dig into it. You can handle this at L2, even.

4. Follow Tip 3. When you come back to the surface through a well, there will be a house to the N/NE with a nice live person inside. (This triggers a short escort quest, but I found it doable at L3.) Once you get back to town, don't forget to talk to the Legion Captain.

5. Talk to the old elf on the bench west of the graveyard (in town).

I don't know if it's because I'm so fucked up when it comes to games and my thinking pattern is different but regardless I always have no problems with enemies in any game.

For example my party is only level 5 and because of how I'm geared up and the build choices I made, I just got done killing about 8 orcs, seven of them were level 6 orcs and the leader which was level 7. without any problems.

I have 2 fighters one is two handed and the other is sword and shield I also have 1 healing type guy (Not a cleric, and not a priest) it's a random combination and 1 mage he does a little bit of everything. All of them can summon spiders which i use to take the attacks of the enemies I'm fighting while I use my mage to cast rain then stun or freeze the enemy.

MY TAKE ON ARCHERY
I refuse to use archers there is nothing anyone is going to be able to do that will convince me that archery is good in this game it's a waste of time to try you can even show videos of an arher wailing on enemies and I'll still tell you archery is terrible in this game and here is why...While the archery itself may be good, it has so many restrictions no other class has ..In my first play to get used to the game I thought I would try out archery and this is my personal experience and what happened....no matter how high my dex was, I kept missing my target 90% of the time, also all the GOOD arrows have to be made and except the very basic arrows, I just couldn't make any good ones and to top it off the good arrows are limited so if you run out in combat you're SOL and have a useless party member. Needless to say I deleted that game afterwards. Archery just has too many restrictions.

HOW I GEAR UP:
Depending on the chest level I will sometimes use the Quicksave and reload option before opening certain chests, but I mainly selling everything to get for gold then buy better stuff, at level 3 I had over 12K in gold because I stole paintings and shit. (Some guy has 3K in gold..that's mine). Note I personally don't consider the quicksave reload an exploit because I legitimately got the items and you can only get 1 set of items...I've wound up getting worse items after reloading too. I also do this because I like to know what types of items are available I also don't know where the item I have on my fighter dropped but take a look at the attached picture. it has everything my one handed fighter uses on it.

I don't waste time buying healing potions, the healer in my party works wonders in and out of combat, my main fighter repairs and Identifies everything.

I still have yet to figure out how to actually go about creating armors and stuff..I know it involves some items but the process still hasn't been explained I also cannot seem to find hammers anywhere either.

Anything is possible in this game with care and a touch of forethought. I am currently playing with the two main characters only -- I haven't even spoken to Madora and Jahan -- and I have also chosen skewed character skills. I have Roderick as a Fighter/Witch (yes), and Scarlet as a Wayfarer/Mage focused on magic. I have to admit, though, this is my second playthrough, so I have that advantage, but even so my characters are not optimised and yet I have not had too much trouble. The first playthrough is always the worst, especially in a game like this, because you just don't know what to expect, and you have to figure things out by yourself. So 2 mages, 1 witch and Madora is eminently do-able. Just take your time, and if you see enemies that are more than a level or two above your own, think again, or prepare accordingly.

@Hickory
Magic in any game is always the most complex mechanic to use, which is why if you want o be effective you will only create a game to mess around with it before actually playing.

I spent about 12 hours with this game both single and multiplayer specifically to do nothing but get used to the game That's how I made the determination that archery is terrible in this game. (See my reply above as to why I say this)

My couple o' tips:

1. Pay attention to the elemental "base" of the enemies. For instance, those self-healing acid spewing zombie pigs are Earth-based. In this game, the opposite of Earth is Air, so air-based spells and weapon attacks will likely give you higher damage for your attacks, and will make them further susceptible to the extra stun / knockdown / whatever effects from your attack.

2. Based on the above, make sure your melee fighters have a variety of elemental weapons at hand. Nothing worse than using an Earth weapon on the zombie pigs, only to find that you're healing them along with every hit. Took me a while to figure that one out! "Would you DIE already?!? Oh crap - I've been healing him." heh

3. Same thing for characters like Jahan, who can use a staff to cast a lower-damage, lower-AP, never-miss ranged attack: be sure to equip the correct elemental staff according to who you'll be fighting.

Those are really apparent when you fight fire-based creatures with water attacks. I've seen a weapon's elemental bonus, which is usually just a fraction of the regular damage, cause as much damage as the physical attack when used against a susceptible enemy.

4. How do I know to which element the enemy is attuned? Scout their surroundings. Fire-based guys have lots of flaming stuff around. Go figure. Earth-based will have puddles of acid on the ground. Etc. You can also get a hint by the types of barrels nearby: there are often barrels of the type opposite the enemy's elemental alignment. For instance, if you're up against fire guys, you'll likely find water barrels in the vicinity. If you need to, use Telekinesis to move barrels to strategic points on the battlefield before the fight starts.

5. Note that you can cast spells before combat starts, but the timer is running as soon as you cast so you might have only one or two spells still active by the time you move forward to initiate combat. One thing I do is to cast the rain spell to get everyone wet - unless I'm going to be fighting Water (and maybe Air) enemies. This can weaken fire-based guys, and also sets me up for freezing them in one shot since they're already Wet.

6. You can also initiate combat out-of-range by using a ranged attack.

7. The Teleport spell can be used for a double (even triple) whammy: The enemy takes crushing damage upon landing, you can move the enemy close to a melee fighter who has yet to attack for that turn or you can move the enemy farther away from you so they waste APs moving back into range, and you can land them on an element that will cause added damage or other effects. With regard to the last, during a fight I had accidentally (and fortuitously) electrified a puddle of water, so when I teleported one enemy I had him land in the puddle. Crush damage, plus the charged puddle stunned him and took him out of the fight for two turns. Since I landed him on the edge of the puddle, my melee fighters could attack the stunned enemy without suffering negative effects themselves, and with 100% chance to hit.

8. Also try to cover your bases with the physical damage types. I'm seeing Slashing, Piercing, and Crushing, and some enemies are either resistant or susceptible to one or more of those. For instance, Crushing is the way to go with Skeletons, so keep club-type weapons handy and equip them before you start a fight. Be aware of the elemental damage, though, so your crushing weapon isn't also healing them via the element on the club. Gotta pay attention to the trade-offs.

9. How do you know which physical damage type they like / hate? Trial-and-error is one way. When you hit, take note of which type you're using and how much damage you're causing. The actual damage is shown in red, and then it will also tell you how much was absorbed. If the Absorbed number is high, then you should probably switch to a different damage type unless the enemy has some special defense activated. This is also when you take note of the elemental damage you're inflicting, to see whether you have the correct element equipped (assuming that weapon has an affiliated element). If you have trouble noting all of the damage info, scroll through the combat log since that will detail the damage results. Note that this is how I figured out I was healing enemies with my elemental attacks.

10. Try to have a no-miss attack available for each character. For instance, Jahan has Head Vice, Blitz Bolt, and his ranged staff attack that will always hit. Bow-users have at least a couple always-hit skill attacks available through skill purchase (but with cool-down times). Pure melee users are tougher to do this with, so you might also want to make sure they have a staff in the inventory for that ranged Source Hunter attack.
So it works quite well now. Thank you for your tips, though some don't work for me.

Sometimes it depends on the position from where your combat starts. Especially if the enemy can ressurrect her units it might be best to retreat outside her spell radius, saved me a lot of trouble during the burning dragon idol in the burning forest area of Cyceal.

Additionally Each spell caster can summon one Elemental/Spider/Skeleton/Thingy. Meaning that in the first round you can get up to three damage sponges that can be replaced easily.

Another important thing is that each mage needs different schools of magic otherwise he can just twitch his thumbs when a resistant enemy of that type appears.

Now my Witch (2nd main character) is the exploring leader outside civilisation with a perception of 12 while my Mage (1st main character) is the charismatic leader and social butterfly getting in touch with everyone.
Thus giving her Lucky Find and Telekenesis abilities while he is going for Charisma and Bartering.
Due to her Perception of 12 she got some points in Dexterity to wield a bow which can score decent damages with 4 AP. Her only drawback is her rather low Intelligence but as a female she can get by her charms anyway...
Splitting up the non combat skills really helped, I just hope there are enough skills for everything I want to learn.

What's civillisation? That's not even a word?
Well it is a word:

It's not a word.

It's not recognized by the dictionary

It's not recognized by thesaurus:

To further prove it's not a word type it into MS word, or Google, or youtube comment anywhere including this forum and you will find it has a red underline, which says it's misspelled and to further prove my point, right click on the red underlined word and you will find the correct spelling. then click on it and watch how it corrects the word with the proper spelling.

Hickory: Just ignore the troll. He's just too stupid to spell it correctly.
Call him or her stupid or a troll is a little harsh. But then again it constantly amazes me how people don't bother paying any attention to how, if a word has a red underline no matter where you type it in, then it's spelled wrong.

Why bother even attempting to argue with the fact that every single place will tell you you're wrong. Especially when direct proof is simply done by typing it into even this forum...No if's and or buts, no exceptions.
