Running on windows 7 though whenever I launch the the game I can never get it to run full screen it always runs with black borders along the screen. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yup I didn't realise after updating the drivers and software on the new laptop that progressing past the start menu screen the game didn't have the black borders. Thanks!

It's a fun game, it was around sixty hours of game play for me so well worth the price !

This was very useful. DD pre-dates common use of the widescreen formats so I just assumed I was stuck in 1024x768 res as well. Then I was confused by the Config tool that offered higher resolutions but didn't seem to do anything. :P

Since others may look here for info on screen resolution problems I will post some info for netbook users

DD works on some netbooks and not on others, seems to be random and determined by individual hardware setups.

If DD does run, the one problem with screen resolution you will have is the menus. DD has two menu sets, one at 1024 x 768 and one at 800 x 600. Any horizontal res higher than 800 will cause the game to use the 1024 x 768 menus. (I don't know this for a fact but only from my own testing)

If you look at the posted image above you will see the 1024 x 600 menu in red showing the menu clipping that occurs. Again, the game will fill the screen but the menus are clipped because the larger menu was forced by the 1024 horizontal res. The start menus may be usable but the in-game menus will not. The OK buttons will not be visible for the Quest menus and other assorted in-game menus.

You can still play the game but you will need to play at 800 x 600 in order to force DD to use the 800 x 600 menus.

If you have a netbook (or any monitor) with a vertical height of 768 or higher the menu clipping will not be noticeable since the 1024 x 768 will be forced by a widescreen but it fits in the vertical res.

Could you post some info about your system? Is it a netbook? The menu problem usually occurs only on systems with a vertical res that is less than 800 and a horizontal res that is greater than 800. The horizontal res greater than 800 causes DD to default to the 1024 x 768 menus as described above which pushes the buttons for the start and internal menus below the screen's bottom edge making them impossible to see /push.

If your system has less than 800 vertical res and larger than 800 horizontal the only way you can play DD is to run it at 800 x 600 which causes the game to use the smaller menus which can be seen.

If your screen size has a vertical height >= 800 this is not the problem. Post some system info if you will . . . =)

??I tried changing the display settings on the off hand chance that I was missing something to no avail. As you can see my vertical res is greater than 800. Also I was able to play the game piror to this, but wanted to try a different character. The game menu will not let me select a class for my new game. I am able to play the save games because I all ready have the game started. Hope you can help. Wanted to try the game as other character choices. Thanks for whatever help you can give. Sorry for not responding as I have been overly busy this week, 5 am and I am getting ready to go out the door.

You should definitely be able to run this game. I will post a response asap, it may be Friday. Could you also post a screen shot of the hidden buttons screen?

Here is a copy of the screen capture showing the buttons that a re missing. I also updated the drives for my graphics card and any Windows 7 drivers, as well as a direct X driver update. These of course were no help at all. I am considering uninstalling the game and then re-installing it. The game worked well after the install I am not sure what happened between then and now. I've only had the game for about two weeks.

Sounds like it was allowing you to access the full screen when you first installed it? I have to ask the following since you are on Win 7.

When you installed did you -

Turn UAC off during the install?
Install in a directory outside of program files?
Right click the setup.exe and click "Run as an administrator" on the resulting dialog?
After installing, did you right click the game short cut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and checkmark "Run this program as an administrator"?
On the same tab checkmark "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition"?

The fact that you were denied access to the config.div makes me think you did not get a proper install, especially if you did not do the above. I would right click the game short cut as described above and checkmark the three items on the Compatibility tab and try the game. Sometimes that is all that is needed to gain full access for the game exe.

If that gives no joy than temporarily disconnect from the internet and temporarily disable your firewall and anti-virus program. Play the game and try setting the res in the config.div file (located in the DD install directory, open with notepad) to 1024 x 800 and attempt to create a character. If you can edit the file, set the res and create a character you need to make the div.exe a trusted program in your firewall and maybe your av program.

If none of the above helps and you did not do the steps during install that I mentioned above . . . I reluctantly suggest you uninstall the game (backup your saves first) and delete any files / directories that may remain after the uninstall.

I would turn UAC off and create a directory on the C drive, not inside the Program Files directory. I use C:\Games. Make sure you right click the setup. exe and click "Run as an administrator" on the resulting dialog. On the first dialog of the GOG installer, click the Options button in the lower left corner and point the install to the directory you created on the C drive. After the install, right-click the game short cut and checkmark the items mentioned above.

That should give you a clean, full install. I turn UAC back on afterward myself. With an install outside of the Program Files directory you should be able to edit the config.div file and set the res to the highest res your monitor supports. I would try the 1024 x 800 as it is a nominal size which seems to work better with DD than the sorta odd resolutions that some monitors use as a default. Win 7 security and UAC can sometime result in access problems for the game and that seems to be what you are experiencing. If none of the above helps . . . post back . . . =)

What is the the UAC? I don't see a place to check that off. Everything else is checked(Run as admin, Disable visual themes,and Disable desktop Composition). I will try the disable firewall and anti-virus step and see if that works

UAC is the little pop up that asks if you want to run / open a program. User Access Control can interfere with a program install on occasion, restricting the program to a limited set of privileges, often affecting it's ability to read / write data to it's files. It seems more aggressive on some systems (probably not so). It is especially vigilant on the Program Files directory. I don't suggest leaving it off as it has a good purpose. It does seem more aggressive on some systems while on others it appears to not affect an install.

Since you have been denied access to the config.div, that tends to make me believe your install was not as an administrator and probably in the Program Files directory. Other than to see if you can edit the config.div, turning it off after an install doesn't necessarily undo the restrictions it might have imposed on the game. Still, worth trying but I mostly meant that you should turn it off if you reinstall and install in a directory outside of Program Files where it is the most restrictive.

Go to the Control Panel, User Accounts, open the UAC interface and move the slider down to Never Notify to temporarily disable UAC. I would turn it back on if turning it off does not allow you to edit your config. div file. Turn it back on after a fresh install as well. See Attache image, far right dialog.

Edit: You should probably check your display setting making sure your running at the highest res your monitor supports as going to a higher res would show more of the game screen. Most support resolutions higher than the 1024 x 768 that you are running but the age of the monitor might restrict you to that res. If another program set the res to a lower setting and did not undo the change on closing - setting it back to the higher res may be your solution . . . =)
