I liked gothic 3
Post edited August 03, 2012 by valdaintheking
I have also enjoyed Gothic 3, got it here on release and found it to be very challenging. Still need to clear the Southern desert . . need to finish it . . . so many games, so little time . . . =)

I have played all the games listed except Lionheart, enjoyed them all. My only complaint would be Nox was only around 12 - 14 hours of gameplay.

i love games that are between 5-15 hours of gameplay, that means i can actually finish a game. I'm so ADD or something like that, that i give up on a game long before i actually finish it. elder scrolls? forget about it. fallout 2? forget about it. baldurs gate? forget about it. fallout 1! now that i can finish!
When I wrote I was having difficulty I was referring to the mini bosses you meet on the third level (I think). My character cannot take one hit from them...and yes I have done the restoration quest and the other early town quests...so I use a bow and kite them. But there is one boss who is a ranged opponent and i just have to run from it. He hits me once and I'm dead. In other words this is not something I am doing that is wrong.
It just takes me too long time to kite them since my bow and skills are minimal.
The rest of the mobs are easy to beat.
I have read a lot of reviews which criticised the starting dungeon...now I know why.
I met a boss in arcanum that was like that. straight up couldnt be beat if you just followed the main story. you had to do the sidequests and gain some combat experiance first.

deathknight1728: Alright. I gave the game a second chance. I made a survivor and it was rough at the beginning, but not so bad now. So far Im taking creatures out one at a time with my sword. The build im using is a finesse fighter build that relies on my sword skill, a high agility to defend from attacks, and a little luck. One thing i really need is to find more equipment that adds to agility and defense.

I think the reason i couldnt play the game before was because i played the mage for my first character. Bad mistake that i made. It really was stupid for me to choose mage as a character as i usually like classes that show alot of finesse.
Yea this is my first time playing and I started out as surivior because he reminded me of Garret of the thief series which I just beat the entire trilogy, I use melee weapons as well for backstabbing oppurtunies but I primarly use a bow as a my weapon and use hit and run tactics, even on skeletons which makes no sense... I just finished the catacombs and restored Marenduas sanity alot easier then expected and now I have alot of stuff and gold. Tip if things become to fast use the pause button( space key). Agility is my key attribute and sometimes strength as well.

siddham: I suppose most of you here have all somehow got over this...but i am in the first dungeon and finding it very tedious. One is faced with multiple monsters that one cannot melee because they can one hit kill you - so you are obliged to kite...and since ones skills are so low it takes forever to kill one of these things...I mean like 15 or 20 mins each...constantly saving because one error and you're dead. As I said...a very tedious and unbalanced beginning to the game...not fun at all.
meteor strike skill helped me and also assassins kiss...
lvl 2 leave trap will fix those dungeons for you

The early mini-bosses ARE tough but you can use your friendly zombie to kill the first 1 or 2 - after that you should have leveled up enough to beat the rest.

Note that you should stay ahead of the zombie so you can kill the mooks and get the experience. When the mini-bosses show up, run away and let the zombie take the hits.
He has a crazy amount of hit points - he can almost certainly take out the first mini-boss. If you help him enough, he'll survive long enough for the next 1 or 2.
I have a question, i'm playing as a wizard and I kept getting one-shot killed by the Skeleton Archer of Doom in the tombs under Aleroth, do you think I would be able to freeze it if I get my freeze spell high enough?

Also, I don't think you need to cure Mardaneus to continue in the game, since i've been playing past that point for a while now.
The survivor's Curse spell can be cast repeatedly on a target to lower its resistances, which can then be followed up by Freeze, Polymorph, etc, or a spell/weapon doing elemental or poison damage.
A higher level of Freeze would probably work, as well (have not played a mage).

You can leave Aleroth and level up, get better equipment, etc. However, if you do any of the quests that get you an invitation to the castle, Mardaneus will be cured without your help (so you'd miss that quest and experience), the healers will move on their own if you had not completed the escort quest, and you will no longer be able to heal both soldiers (Otho and Goemoe's patients).

Divine Divinity is very slow and tedious and I suppose" Hardcore" title but it is a old game and it was made for a different audience (old school RPGer) then Divinity 2 was apparently, so theres no real reason to bother complaining about how unbalanced it is.

The most one can really do with it is cheat, cheat, and cheat. Its alot more fun with what I like to call "measured cheating" wherein you cheat just enough to overcome the tedium factor.

LordRikerQ: Divine Divinity is very slow and tedious
Apparently I'm an 'old school RPGer' because I never found DD slow, and there was only a bit at the beginning and a bit at the end which became tedious (and most of the end could be skipped).

I didn't find any need to cheat. The only difficulties I had could be easily resolved by a different approach, better equipment or exploring in a different direction first.

You probaly are "an old school RPGer', as are many here who prefer these old style RPGs over modern ones. Not that anything is wrong with that. But to be fair, I didnt see Larian making Divinity 2 with the same balancing and design descisions as Divine Divinity had. Its alot less tedious and fun to play compared to the older games and that seems to keep getting tuned more and more with each release of Divinity 2, I've noticed how much better pacing it has gotten since the original release.

I think most people can agree it is that way for a reason, most gamers these days prefer their RPGs with less tedium ala Skyrim or Mass Effect etc. It has been a point of contention and why indie devs have made more old school style RPGs.
