All very great information, vv221! Thanks!

This is my first introduction to DevilutionX so I apologize for my ignorance. I'll go check with them on further matters.

I appreciate the GHI link, I've subscribed to it. I also appreciate that you're not linking directly to things. I'm kind of embarrassed that I simply copied and pasted! I'll give the windowed mode a shot and see what happens, though.

Regarding MX Linux, it's a mix of a few things. It comes from the antiX folks with some repos from Mepis, I think. It is mostly Debian at heart and I think antiX started with Debian. Funny enough, MX Linux has risen to the top of the distrowatch charts this year and I have no idea why. I've been using it for a couple of years but I assumed it was pretty obscure. I found it via antiX some years ago. I was running Debian on all of my machines and needed something for my netbook (super low resource) for ham radio stuff and ended up installing antiX. Found MX via their forums and tried it on a couple of my main rigs. I've been using it ever since.

Thanks again for the help and Happy Hacking!

I see read-only access to diabdat.mpq is in current master: Allow readonly mpq archive access
I guess we can safely assume it will be included in the next release?

Yes, but that might take some time.

Sure, I take that I granted ;)
I'm in no hurry anyway, I could still build my binaries against current master if I want to give it an early try.

For a more realtime status, this link might be better https://github.com/diasurgical/devilution/milestone/4 we are currently 78% done with Hellfire. The full focus hasn't been on Helfire as there were some things in DevilutionX that needed to be addressed. Hopefully we can have it fully supported in a couple of months.

Yes, and 0.5.0 was released 11 days ago :)
It's a huge update with native 64bit support (crucial for continued macOS support), as well as fixing all known in-game issues.

Now that innoextract 1.8 has been released, with support for the hacky installers used by GOG, we were on our way to publish the ./play.it script for Diablo. But with the 0.5.0 release of DevilutionX I’m most probably going to take some time to update the script so we use this version instead of 0.4.0 before publishing anything.

Cool, native 64bit support should also help out on Linux where many distors (Ubuntu amongst others) had build SDL2 in a way that needed workarounds to launch. Hopefully it won't be as long before we release 0.6.0 :)

1.0.0 is now out with lots of improvements and feature completeness.

Thanks for the heads up, I re-opened our TODO task about devilutionX updates: Diablo - New releases of DevilutionX

I’m currently quitting my job to be able to focus more on ./play.it development and maintenance, so the release of Diablo support by ./play.it should happen soon. I’ll make sure it supports devilutionX 1.0.0 (or a more recent one) when we release it.
Our in-development script has been updated to rely on devilutionX 1.0.0 (0.4.0 was used in the previous version).
This means the ./play.it script now builds a 64-bit package instead of a 32-bit one, the transition is transparent if you already installed the 32-bit version.

As usual, the current version can be downloaded from our forge: New game: Diablo

Wait so how does this work?
It does not look like you are using any wine tricks or what ever.

Most of the magic is done by innoextract and devilutionX.
The ./play.it script provides some automation around these tools so you don’t have to learn how to use them, but it’s their respective developers who did the most important work ;)
