'Hallo everyone,

I have a question .... i just installed Diablo 1 from GOG and i noticed that you can "save the game" instead of "save and exit"
THE PROBLEM IS when you load the game you start exactly where you left the game. All Monsters you killed before are still dead ...there are no respawns.... HDF am i supposed to level up ?!?!?
there are just not enough enemies .

Please Help me ...am I just to dumb ?!??!

this is a serious question
When your character gains enough experience, a level-up button will appear on the left side of the screen, near the base of the dungeon view.

If you don't have enough experience to level up yet, then you need to keep traveling and fighting. Go to deeper levels. Each floor starts with plenty of monsters on it. Somewhere on each floor[1], you will find a stairway down to the next floor. If you are new to the game, you should note where it is, but clear the current level before descending deeper into the labyrinth. If you get lost, use the automap. It remembers where stairs have been seen.

[1]: On level 15, special rules apply for reaching level 16. On level 16, you will find and defeat the final boss, so there is no way to go deeper. At that point, you must start a new game.

Yes, thank you ...but that is not my question.

I know that in diablo 2 ...when you leave the game all monsters respawn....so you can farm as much expirience as you want ...but that is not poosible in diablo 1 ....there are no respawns because of this save option.....do you know what i mean ? i want to clear areas again so i can farm more expirience
Start a new game instead of loading the previous one...

I find that game where monster just respawn are basically broken. It sounds like you are more used to playing multiplayer games where things aren't persistent, maybe try that.

It resets the dungeon layout and conceals the map again... just as Diablo 2 does. It also resets the quests because quests are random and you won't get every quest in every game.

Which is exactly how Diablo 2 works. But the only bosses you HAVE to kill are Arch-bishop Lazarus and Diablo.

Not always. When you reach certain character levels then the shortcuts you discover that lead directly to dungeon levels 5, 9 and 13 will automatically be open in each new game. If you're not high enough level, you'll need to rediscover them but once you've leveled up enough they'll always be there.

Diablo 1 is a MUCH smaller game than D2 -- it's only a single 16-level dungeon. It's also quite possible to beat the game without needing to reset/respawn.

Also, if you play the game in multi-player mode (even with a single character) then it does NOT save the entire world state and works much like D2 does -- respawning all enemies on reload. However, multi-player mode doesn't have as many quests as single player mode does.

This is only true for Hellfire.

Wow... my memory is really fading. Does it at least do this in multi-player Diablo 1? I could have sworn I've started a new game with a leveled up character and gone directly to Hell in the original. But I've played as much Hellfire as the original, so I might be getting some crossed memories. :-)

EDIT: Ah... did a little checking and in the original those shortcuts are always open in new games on nightmare and hell difficulties (regardless of character level).

Yes all entries are open in multiplayer, but you can only enter them if you are of a sufficient high level (the player will stop and an error will be displayed).

But 777Tobe777 is obviously playing singleplayer since the topic is about the save function :)

That's not quite true. In all difficulty levels of multiplayer, those entrances follow the same rules: the shortcut is always visible, but the character must be a minimum level to use the shortcut. A character who satisfies that level can use the shortcut; a character who does not, cannot. As a quirk, it seems like they're permanently open in Nightmare and Hell because the character level requirement is not scaled. For example, you must be level 17 to enter floor 13, regardless of difficulty. Since you must be level 20 to enter Nightmare difficulty, anyone who can enter Nightmare (and thus is at least level 20) can use any shortcut (because they are at least level 17). Some mods may relax the difficulty level gate, allowing much lower level characters to enter non-Normal games. This was particularly popular when mule characters were the standard way to set aside high quality items. Relaxing the difficulty level gate does not, on its own, relax the shortcut level gate, although a mod could relax both.

Also, note that Town Portals have no level gate, regardless of where they go. A character level 1 character can use a Town Portal to step directly into the Hell floors, if a character on a Hell floor opens a portal. The caster still needs to get there the long way, either by satisfying a level-gated shortcut or by hiking down.
Presses load - "All Monsters you killed before are still dead ...there are no respawns.."
Presses new game - "Yes, but all progress is gone when i do it like this....all bosses have to be killed again and all secret ways have to be unlocked again... that just cant be true...did they realy ruin they game with that save option???"

I don't understand. You wanted a way to respawn monsters and kill more stuff, you got one.
As a slightly related point, I should note that replaying areas is not generally necessary. The game provides enough monsters and treasure that, carefully managed, you should usually be able to finish in a game without resetting. If you get very bad random number rolls, or you manage your resources poorly, then you might need to reset. What circumstances prompted you to want to grind?
Perhaps he is referring to the fact that in Diablo 2 single player all map layouts stay the same. Save & Exit = same layout.

I'm not talking about areas like Chaos Sanctuary or Throne of Destruction which are always the same, but about the randomly generated ones like Den of Evil, The Pit, Ancient Tunnels, Worldstone Keep levels, etc.
Diablo 2 singleplayer randomly generates only one map layout per difficulty per character. Let's use labels:
Normal gets layout A
Nightmare gets layout B
Hell gets layout C
Every time you Save and Exit, then start a New Game on a character, it will load the same layouts for that character. So Den of Evil map on Normal will always look like layout A. On Nightmare, layout B, on Hell layout C.

---

Diablo 2 multiplayer characters reset their map every time you start a new game. Save & Exit = new layout.
Same goes for Battle.net and private server characters. Create Game = new layout.
Diablo 1 works like Diablo 2 multiplayer, for both singleplayer and multiplayer characters. New Game = new layout.

---

You don't lose any progress by creating a "New Game". This is true for both Diablo 1 and Diablo 2. Your character level, stats, inventory, skills, they are all carried over into the New Game.

The process is the same aswell.
In D2 you press ESC -> Save and Exit -> select your character -> press OK to enter a new game.
In D1 you press ESC -> New Game -> select your character -> press OK to enter a new game.
Sorry to bump this a bit old thread, but seems like going from Diablo 2 people don't really understand how Diablo 1 works. So maybe it will help anyone.
Diablo 1 works almost exactly the same as Diablo 2
Now let me explain. Yes, you are supposed to restart the game. Yes, map will be regenerated and quests will reset. But:
1) you will keep everything you have in the inventory, your level and your stats
2) this is exactly the reason behind why the quests are random - so you will still have a bit of a new adventure every time you restart. randomly generated maps are exactly here because of this too
3) not only do maps and quests reset, but items in shops too. Only by resetting the game will you find more items, books, gold and get more experience.
4) yes, you can beat the game in one go without restarting, but it became tedious and really hard really quick. again, this is not the way

As was previously told, Diablo 1 works in single player just like Diablo 2 in multiplayer - the maps will reset here too. It's just the nature of the game. This is what makes it a roguelike. Save & exit in D2 is almost the same as starting a new game in D1, although a bit more glorified just because D2 is a much, much bigger game. Try to look at it not as a linear journey where you go from start to finish but more like an oldskool arcade game where you go as far as you can until you can't anymore and then start again with the knowledge of what lies ahead. And a butcher's axe in the inventory.
