Excellent. I'm just about to test that version myself and will update the OP if it works alright.

The patch didnt run the game for me, as it needs the CD and even then would not run for with GOG version (it played the opening videos then quit.) Also comapt mode is needed otherwise you will get some DirectDraw error. So i'll add it as a link for the OP.

I see 2 problems. One is I stopped being able to alt-tab and minimize the game when I want to see the Windows desktop. The other is the highlighted loot disappeared and I have to search for the loot now with my mouse. It may have reset the graphics files which I will check video settings and recopy and past the 3 files.

I just copied and pasted the files except for the command.txt which I edited manually.

I cant be 100% they might be issues with running the original versions now days. Using my guide and Hellfire Enchanced I can alt-tab fine in Hellfire. GOG's version also minimizes fine for me in their wrapper and using their wrapper in Hellifre minimizes fine for me as well. Thats one way to run it.

I couldnt get Hellfire running for me with the patch I linked to you (it just showed the opening videos then threw me back to the desktop.) If someone else wants to throw suggestions feel free.

Sorry I cant be any more help at the moment. :(

Hmmm yes, possible issues with graphics and/or messup with GOG's files of Diablo 1, might be...

I used the BattleChest Diablo 1 disk. But it worked just fine. No issues. I didn't try Alt+Tab at all, though, so i cannot comment on that. Apologies.

See? That is why so big of an issue, this game package being incomplete. Had GOG laid its hands upon Hellfire and tampered with it, now we would have had an official, legit, properly working, COMPLETE GAME PACKAGE/EXPERIENCE!

DAMN! JUST BRING US THE EXPANSION TOO, ALREADY!!!

I am looking more closely at the description of the Hellfire enhanced mod.

"Hellfire Enhanced is a mod for Hellfire v1.01, which modernizes the game. It allows the game to be played on modern OS, fixes bugs of the game, activates multiplayer, gives UDP support for multiplayer. And that's it for now."

I don't know how much Hellfire v 1.01 was used for this. But I am able to play Barbarian. Haven't tried Monk yet.

I don't know how much Hellfire v 1.01 was used for this. But I am able to play Barbarian. Haven't tried Monk yet.
I don't know how Hellfire Enchanced works with multiplayer (as I dont play that.)

But I chose that mod as it only seems to make it more reliable to run under newer operating systems and hardware only unlike mods such as The Hell which whilst adds Hellfire also changes alot of other stuff, which I dont want when I get around to playing Diablo for the first time.

This is what worked for me.

From the Hellfire cd I added the files from the original post in this thread (minus the optional files) folder I created.
Then I added the 7 Hellfire v 1.01 manual files to the Hellfire folder and overwrote all files.
Lastly I extracted all the files from the Helffire Enhanced 1.02 RC 7.2 mod into the Hellfire folder and replaced all files. The mod includes all the command.txt modules except for Cowquest.

I tested this by creating a few characters and it seems to work very well. You will see the Hellfire 1.02 RC 7 version on startup. You might not even have to install the 1.01 patch, but the description of the mod said you should.

This should be the Hellfire expansion with the latest official patch. And I am satisfied. I hope it works for all of you.

You dont need the official patch (so 1.01) if you installed Enhanced or another mod and it works for you. As They all surpass it version wise. 1.01 is legacy only as Enhanced seems to not to work for some people (currently looking into it) but updating Hellfire 1.01 did.

Though i'll say again I could not get 1.01 official running under the GOG version of Diablo. I'm currently looking into it though.

Also if someone is willing to help me test MP with the Enhanced then let me know. (As I dont whilst have any intrest in playing MP, but its been requested alot and I feel its something this guide should assist with.) Or 1.01 official Hellfire with GOGs version (non Enhanced.)

Pond86: Hellfire's setup is 32 bit and not 16 bit. Also it seems to be a hit and miss for it not running as I can run it fine on 64 bit.

I am a bit surprised that Hellfire has a 32 bit setup,in 1997 most games had the 16 bit setup.
But the copy and paste method you gave worked just fine.
Runs fine for me in 64-bit Win10, version 1903, build 18356.1. (Insider's) Remember that Win95/98 were 16/32-bit OSes built on top of a DOS shell. Either one would work but 16-bits was mainly included for compatibility with what at the time were older games. Any developer looking for both power and longevity for his game would go the 32-bit route, of course. That was a wise choice, because even the latest Win10 (my build above, for instance) will run 1997 32-bit Windows software without a huge amount of hassle.

Are you using GOG's version or the original? Does Diablo run fine? Is it just Hellfire that has issues?

Lost the original during cleaning and moving old stuff, so i got the GOG version , instabuy ofcourse , prepaid, and now you cannot refund because it doesnt work, they need bank account : ($_$)
so offering paysafe is nice but they should mention the paysafe account that is upgradable via bak and cheques, not prepaid paysafe card , a ticket wit x amount of euros or dollars, they cannot be refunded, so ....

Hi,

I was hoping you could add this to help everyone else out since this is stickied.

To play multiplayer Hellfire retail:
-Install LogMeIn Hamachi
-Create a channel and invite friends
-Go to Hellfire install directory and run the ipxwrapper.exe (This is assuming you ran the Hellfire Enhanced. In my case I put all my Hellfire files in the GOG Diablo install folder, yes the one GOG Diablo runs out of)
-Make sure Hamachi is your primary and when you highlight Hamachi in the list that it is checked
-Start multiplayer and choose LAN (IPX)

I can confirm that the cowquest, barb, monk, nest, and bard work. I haven't had Theo or the crypt spawn yet (or I havent gotten there yet, clvl10)
