sidv88: Considering that Sierra made the expansion, and Sierra after a long chain of events was bought out by Activision Blizzard, unless I'm missing something there's no legal reason they can't use the expansion.

I think the lack of rerelease of the expansion is more due to Blizzard not wanting to bring it back into canon. They've shown a reluctance to canonize expansions not developed by them directly, as seen with Starcraft Insurrection and Retribution, or Warcraft 2's 4 authorized expansions other than Beyond the Dark Portal.

No, the developer belonged to Sierra too: Synergistic was acquired by Sierra On-Line in 1996. They maintained their identity as an independent development group within Sierra for several years. However, the studio was closed on February 22, 1999.

Also, regarding your following post, I didn't have any trouble installing the expansion on a 64 bit system.

Activision never bought Sierra. Vivendi bought Activision (half) and merge Vivendi Universal Games to Activision Blizzard (blizz never be independent company). Sierra = VU Games = Activision Blizzard.

I saw some articles that Kotik want to buy Vivendi 50% back, but never see that this really happened. If yes - that can be a lot of legal problems. But it seems that never happened: AB still publish\re-sell some old games. And some new - Crash Bandicoot\Spyro remakes.

dudalb: Heads Up:If you have a Windows 64 bit system, you will have to use the create a new folder and paste method in the OP's instructions. Set up for hellfire would not run; apparently is suffers from the infamous "windows 64 bit does not like 16 bit install programs" syndrome. Don't waste time trying to make it work, just use the paste method in the OP. it works fine.
Hellfire's setup is 32 bit and not 16 bit. Also it seems to be a hit and miss for it not running as I can run it fine on 64 bit.

Found the 1.01 patch!!! Working for 64 bit systems, too! You can manually copy over the files from the compressed archive, to the installed game dir!

Problem is, some no-lifers, "fans" of mine, downvoted me a lot, so i cannot post links... But i will describe how to find it.

Google search: "hellfire contents of 1.01 patch"

Down the results, near the top of the page, is a facebook link: "For diablo etc THOONEN'S COMPUTER GAMES"

For Diablo 1 - Hellfire Patch to 1.01
runs on all x64 (64 bit) windows ( works for me )

1) Just download this zip file unpack it,

The link to the manual file is broken. I only find the Hellfire 1.01 patch, and it only contains 2 fiels. Hellfire.exe and patch.txt file (explains the update changes).

It's the manual patch zip from mediafire link. It contains 7 files, including a command.txt! Works normally for me; also, launched the game with Diablo disc in and the version number is correct. 1.01!

I would have posted the link directly to downloading it, but as i said, some no lifers are to "thank" for my inability to.

Just to clarify those command.txt lines for Hellfire a little cause you might not want them all:


multitest = enables multiplayer in Hellfire 1.00 (and you want to play 1.01 anyway)

barbariantest = adds the barbarian class (but only if you play in 1.01)

bardtest = adds the bard class

nestart = activates a specific nestlayout with other colour palette (which looks worse and disables random nest levels)

cryptart = same with the crypt

cowquest = adds a quest to get a cow armour (but you won't get the Auric amulet which enables you to hold more gold)

theoquest = adds a quest to find a teddy for an amulet (if you don't have to quest, the named mob will just drop the amulet)


So consider what you really want...personally I only add the two extra classes.

Just weird ness. then.
I am a bit surprised that Hellfire has a 32 bit setup,in 1997 most games had the 16 bit setup.
But the copy and paste method you gave worked just fine.

Yes, for me it also worked like a charm! Official-patch, original 1.01 Hellfire experience!
