the wrapper is not game specific.it works with starcraft as well and removes the windows 7 color issue. the gog version does have the advantage of running the data from the harddrive, which is faster. the gog version still have not fixed the missing multiplayer however.

It uses the community no-cd hack to do so, and the same is true for the one from bnet so not sure what advantage your talking about since it's not unique to it. which is faster.

it includes a community made network wrapper for Lan and they have there global gateway for match making so not sure what you mean that it's missing

the multiplayer option in the gog version of hellfire is simply missing. that is a result of using version 1.01 patch. it disabled the multitest command, while enabling the barbariantest command. what they should do is add it back. i have played multiplayer in that version of hellfire but, i had to use a hack to do it. it was long before i joined gog and i used my official discs to do it. i lost that hack however. it could still be on a pc somewhere but, i am not sure which one.

no, it was not needed for the release version(version 1.00). multiplayer there only requires the multitest command. for me of course that is still an option.
