Is there a way to setup a direct IP connection to play with your friends? The advertising mentions it, however I could not find any options to do so within the game.

From what the GOG staff has said in other threads, it sounds like the advertisements were unintentionally misleading. They didn't add TCP/IP support, but the game does have LAN support. It seems to me that there was a miscommunication between the devs and the social media/advertising people; perhaps it was just a simple mixup, perhaps something got lost in translation.

Ahh, I see. Thank you for clarifying. That's a shame though, I wanted to host games on my PC for my friends to connect to.
The only way to play D1 over the internet is over Battle.net or through Virtual LAN setups, like Hamachi, Tunngle, GameRanger and similar 3rd party applications.

Alternatively, the mod named Tchernobog has direct IP connection support, but that's a complete overhaul of the game.

I will look into one of those Virtual LAN setups. Thank you for the information.
Update: I installed Hamachi and was easily able to play with my friends over the internet. Thank you again for your suggestion!

DevilutionX is a source port with TCP and UDP network implementation (including network encryption).

If you replace the file named Standard.SNP with a copy taken from original Starcraft it will add the UDP option to Diablo's multiplayer menu.

Apparently it no longer works with GOG version of Diablo 1.

I followed your advice and I copied the file "standard.snp" from StarCraft 1 dir to Diablo\dx and no extra UDP option appears in the game. Have you tested it yourself? If it works for you perhaps you could share the relevant file (standard.snp) with us somewhere.

Not that I need it, as I was able to play the game with other people using Hamachi + IPX wrapper option, but straight UDP within vanilla Diablo is something that got my attention.

Many modern routers support setting up a VPN. I have a Netgear AC1750, was able to turn the VPN option on and then my friends just needed to install OpenVPN and follow the directions that the router provided and we were able to play in IPX mode without any problems.

I have, it still works. Maybe your starcraft wasn't patched? UDP was added in an update iirc.
Note that you still need a way to make both PCs think they're on the same LAN (VPN or other bridging software - it's just to locate the games, actual play works over WAN) so if you've already got it working there's probably no point going to the effort.
Well old classic versions of old games on old computers have modem\serial direct conneton for 2 only players. Currently in Diablo you can play only with IPX wrapper or Bnet both for 4 pl.

(Always_) Check text and executable (bat) files in game folder (at least in offline gog downloader version). Some of them apply to online functionality.

P.S. Never install any IPX wrappers on one of my Win7 pc, but have IPX option in old games (incl. Wc2 Bnet Edition) on that pc.

Me and some friends played over Hamachi with no additional software. So either it wrapper is no longer needed or it is integrated, even though the option says IPX.

Edit: opened the folder and there it is... works great with Hamachi, which is weird because a few years ago when we tried it we couldn't get it to work on a real LAN.

No need for hamachi with ipxwrapper...
