I'm finally playing the CD battlechest version (not GOG) that has been collecting dust for about 14 years now.

So quick question: there is just one save slot? Any more and you have to manually make backups by copying the file?

That's a very odd design decision for a 1996 game.

Each character has its own, single save file, yes.

Thanks for confirming. I'll just be backing up then regularly.

Did they ever say... why? That's a very odd design decision.

Originally they wanted it so that if you died you had to start over.

I'm not sure why you think this is odd, it's t he most straight forward way to do it, so probably no design desission, rather then a specific one

But having one save slot doesn't cause this to happen. You die - you don't start over: you reload your one save slot.

wat, how about you play the game instead of asking pointless questions? :D People that made it mostly knew what they were doing and atm I have a feeling you are questioning stuff and making wrong assumptions without even playing the game

That's because it's not how they originally intended, but they bowed to feedback during development, it's a compromise that satisfies most users.

Ah, I see.
Personally, I think no saves at all with some checkpoint system might have been a good compromise. Or an ironman-style save-only-when-you-quit. But I can see how they made this choice now.

Thanks for the answer.
