Splatsch: Which mod (working with GOG version) would you advice ?
avatar
SpecShadow: I would advise Diablo - The Hell HD mod but for some reason it got deleted. It was the best mod for that game - works on modern systems, 60FPS, HD resolutions and gameplay changes making it challenging but not hardcore.

Oh and The Hell brings content from Hellfire expansion pack - items, Monk class, Crypt and Hive levels, you can even find Bovine Armor :]
Just to clarify - The Hell has not been "deleted", but it HAS moved from its own website to a Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/thmod

SpecShadow: no, Hellfire is not needed
you just need to unpack mod, put DIABDAT.MPQ in it and you're ready to go.
Thank you very much :)

wanty: For those who think Belze, Hell and others change to much of the game:

https://diablopat.ch/index.php

has basic improvements and doesn't change the gameplay itself. Didn't test it with GOG's Diablo yet though.
Sounds very nice ! I'll take a look too :) Thanks !

I'm having trouble in getting Diablo to stay in fullscreen with Belzebub. The moment I change the resolution to 1080p and enable fullscreen, things appear oversized and way off center. I then turned fullscreen off and get a belzebub.exe has stopped working error along with a crash to the desktop. I get the same error when I boot up the mod and have to go into the data folder to delete the settings with this issue repeating again on further tries. Any help or insight on this would be wonderful.

Right click on the executable / Compatibility tab / (at the bottom) Change high DPI settings / make sure both boxes are checked

This worked for the most part--I can't alt-tab out without it crashing, but that's okay. Thanks so much!

Diablopatch throws up an error when it finds gog's 1.09 exe.

Hastur.: I can confirm that Belzebub works with our version.
We were hoping that the GOG version gave us a 1080p option.

the thing is belzebub also makes fundamental changes to how Diablo plays bringing it more in line with Diablo 2.

nah, I'm talking about HD version of the mod, I asked original creator about that and he said he might bring it back somewhere in the future.

TH2 have a lot of technical improvements but brings so much gameplay changes it turns it into mess inspired by Path of Exile :] I'll wait for v1.0 release.
Did you mean this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slDbb5q73Zc

It's yet another modified ddraw.dll and it works for any version of Diablo, not just The Hell mod.

That is not an HD version. That is the original 4X3 aspect ratio version distorted by stretching it out. It looks like crap.

No shit, sherlock. Instead of posting useless posts with the obvious, you might want to post something relevant to the discussion, for example said "The Hell HD mod" video which was deleted.

The Hell 2 mod offers fullscale HD, from 800 x 600 to 3840 x 2160, plus it supports adjustable framerates, widescreen, borderless window mode, switching from windowed to fullscreen on the fly (alt+enter),
fixes ALL of Diablo 1 bugs that were left there by developers ( you can even check DSF buglist for Diablo 1 on Lurker's Lounge for that ),
plus a megaton of QoL improvements like gold autopickups and additional weaponslots.

Great input. www.patreon.com/thmod is very interesting.
But, I think I'm seeing similarities to the ...\Diablo\dl file version form GOG.
In Window mode only, you can select various video resolutions.
In fact, I think it may be exactly the same technology.
Am I missing something?

Regardless, this is what I have been posting:

To play the GOG version of Diablo 1 in original 4X3 aspect ratio (on Windows 10 with a 1080p monitor).

1. Use the version in the ...\GOG\Diablo\dl folder
In this folder is another copy of Diablo 1 - but, with some Microsoft DirectX stuff

2. Execute ...\GOG\Diablo\dx\dxcfg.exe and select 1280x1024 Display Mode

3. Set Presentation = Windowed (Fullscreen does not work)

4. Select Save

5. Set the Windows 10 Taskbar settings to "Automatically hide taskbar in desktop mode" = "on"

6. Double click on Diablo.exe to launch the game.
Do not double-click on DiabloLauncher.exe to start the game

Oddly, if you run:
...\GOG\Diablo\dx\dxcfg.exe
and change to 1920x1080
and leave Presentation = Windowed
This gives a 4:3 aspect ratio in full-screen-mode.

If you play around with ...\GOG\Diablo\dx\dxcfg.exe you will
find it provides Diablo in various 4:3 aspect displays in various ways.
