Or maybe a better question, can you continue to play after you kill Diablo or does it always automatically revert to last saved game?

Not that i know of. You sort of can continue to play on MP if another player is hanging in town, then rejoin the game. Otherwise in SP you are out of luck. One of the very few things that always bugged me.

diablo is not even a boss, he would not really drop anything of value anyway

He does, from all the years i slayed him he has droped worthless stuff like gold, regular items or even magic items. But very very rarely.

If you use diablo saver (old school program legits used to use to scan others for hacks and save back ups of their characters) you can disable the ending movie which allows you to continue to play after killing diablo.
