Turns out I won't be able to revisit Battery Park, Revision always crashes when I leave the island... :/
Just dropping in to say how disappointed I am the Caustic Creations for making Revision a Steam-exclusive, and also to say thanks to the people who are posting about how to get this to work on other versions of Deus Ex. I won't be playing this on principle(and also because I've read reviews which say it honestly isn't worth it, at least in its current state), but I applaud the people who are actively trying to work out how to play this mod on non-Steam versions of DX.

While I'm commenting, I might as well recommend the best mod for Deus Ex that I've ever played, called The Nameless Mod. It's totally free. Just google "The Nameless Mod" and enjoy.
Agree with "Stormwalker" here. I wanted to add a few more thoughts on this situation.

I was concern that STEAM wasn't going to stop their efforts to eventually control modding for PC games using STEAM Works or STEAM workshop. I read that Caustic Creations might also add Deus Ex tools to STEAM workshop.

I started watching for this activity since April of this year when STEAM failed trying to establishing pay mods for Skyrim. That situation was mostly about paying for mods. However, the owner of the Nexus mod website, even at that time, was concern that putting exclusive mods in STEAM could eventually lead to DRM modding.

Skyrim has a too large and established modding community for this to work right out of the gate. But smaller or older titles could fall under the radar for STEAM exclusive modding. Apparently Deus Ex is this start.

I understand this is a free mod and I don't have to use it. But that's not the point here. This is STEAM and agreements with publishers slowly trying to control modding under the disguise of "easy to update and convenience" along with putting the game on sale for $1.39. Gabe Newell said it was dumb if companies did this but wouldn't stop it. I think he should if he doesn't support "DRMification of modding." I just can't trust Gabe Newell here.

I read from one STEAM user that defended this by saying that Caustic Creations can't maintain the mod for all Deus Ex version out there which is why they only focused on STEAM. Crazy.

I think I need to finish modding all my PC games that need it before this gets worse.

I'm going to try the "New Vision" mod.

Which is a blatant lie, all Deus Ex GOTY versions are similar, all the big mods work the same on them. If you make a mod for one it will work on the others. The funny thing is that I saw people on Steam forums having trouble running the game without glitches or crashes while it's perfectly smooth so far on my GOG version.

Caustic just made on purpose an *.exe that only works if you launch the game through Steam. Otherwise the mod itself is compatible with any 1.112fm patched Deus Ex. It's not much about making a mod for the Steam version of the game, they made it in a way to prevent it from running on other versions. So yeah it's kind of a DRM mod...

Wow. Just Wow. That's weak.

And I was looking forward to DX Revision. Between this and the recent BS with Mankind Divided - I think I've lost my appetite for Deus Ex for quite a while...

(Maybe by the time it comes back, Cyberpunk 2077 will be done!)

Ok, last round of news: I managed to make it work pretty well, even with New vision + HDTP.

You should use THIS Direct3D 10 renderer. It works well, very well. You must tune it to fix some minor graphical bugs, but it is still an improvement over OpenGL. Load times are shorter and my HDD is less stressed than before.

I'll try to complete Liberty Island and see if it crash when loading Battery Park or not.

PD: One last thing. If you want to use Shifter/Biomod, make sure to elevate the correct folder above the System folder in the Data Directories section of Kentie's Launcher.

Don't blame the developers, blame Square Enix - they're trying to trick us into rebuying the game on steam!

Here's a message I received from a dev of the mod:

We are officially Steam-exclusive at the request of Square Enix; we have no plans to release an official non-Steam installer. We're aware of successful efforts to play the mod through non-Steam copies of Deus Ex, though we can't make any promises or suggestions about these efforts. However you end up playing it, we hope you enjoy our work!
They won't disobey SE, propably in fear of them pulling the mod from the web / issuing a cease and desist.
Hear ye, hear ye! A guy from ModDB called arti9m posted something neat in DX Revision comments section..though it got buried quickly under all that hate/praise. And that neat thing is original Revision.exe completely stripped of all the annoying Steam DRM. I don't know who made it...heh, could be "leaked" by the devs themselves. :D But it's 100% legit and clean..tested it myself. And all the features we lost with the Kentie launcher workaround now work as they should so you can switch between original and new soundtrack, Shifter/BioMod/vanilla gameplay style, the new loading screens show and new HUD/menus color schemes are available.
So for those interested..here's the link: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33786936/Revision.zip

What's the recent BS with mankind Divided?

That whole awful "augment your pre-order" scheme which had a ridiculous and confusing system of tiers of exclusive DLC and digital extras that unlocked as more people pre-ordered. They were even holding the game's release date hostage in it, too. Squeenix came to their senses and scrapped it, but it still left a really sour taste in my mouth.

Regardless, the game just looks like a direct sequel to Human Revolution that takes few risks. I'm bored of Adam Jensen. I killed him at the end of HR. He's dead.

Have you tested it? Do you need to delete the Kentie launcher or restart the game?

Just tested, it works just fine. Their launcher and Kentie's seem to be stepping on each other's toes so you have to choose which one you want to use and saved games don't seem to be compatible. Thanks for the link!

Original Revision exe pros:
- well that's the one suppposed to work better with the mod
- you can switch between soundtracks in the game's option menu
- a few additionnal color schemes for the UI

Original Revision exe cons:
- not as flexible as Kentie's launcher, less options
- HUD/UI management is not a good as Kentie's

If that's an "unofficial leak" coming from the devs, they're all forgiven as far as I'm concerned. It was probably the best they could do given the situation they were in thanks to Square Enix' Drek heads.

Yup..tested. Well you don't need to delete anything as this overwrites the Kentie launcher. Everything else stays as it is.

There's just one thing I haven't figured yet with that "official unofficial" Revision.exe, in the game you have to chose between Shifter and Biomod, can't you use them both at the same time?

Zoidberg: Have you read what "steam users" say about this issue?

Also, would be nice to have a sticky exlaining how to get this to work with non-steam versions (gog, retail, etc...).
Links please? I want some reading material for when i'm board :)
