I'm five hours into this game and I'm feeling like I'm missing something. When I look at walkthroughs they generally say to use speed enhancement or whatever other augment to do this or that and I don't really have any augments. I have Microfibral Muscles, EMP Shield, and Regeneration. That's it.

There have been a couple of areas that have loot that I can't even get to or I have to take so much damage to get there that it isn't worth it.

According to How Long to Beat, this game is around 25 hours long. If it was a 60-100 hour game I wouldn't be worried, but 5 hours it a pretty good ways in without feeling like I've gotten enough augmentations to get to places I need to go. I don't even remember there being an opportunity to get other augmentations or anything.

I'm also completely lost because there is no map, but that's another story.

Any help? Did I just miss something?

Well, there are usually several ways to go to a specific area, maybe the ones that seem too dangerous have alternate paths or methods of access. Where are you stuck?

Augmentations are usually hidden in locked places and you'll need to explore the levels a lot to get some of them. Note that levels that you revisit (UNATCO HQ & Hell's Kitchen) have differences on each visit and some augmentations are there at a specific time. Also note that each canister gives you the choice between two augmentations: if you get the one for the legs and choose "silent steps", you can't have "extra speed".

If you need a detailed walkthrough, I recommend the fully illustrated one from Visual Walkthroughs. Warning: there are spoilers on the main page with the level names. ;)
First of all - there is no wrong way to play Deus Ex. I like to challenge myself sometimes by playing with no augmentations at all.

That said - It looks like you missed a couple, but it doesn't matter too much. I think there are 19 canisters in the game. You will find duplicate canisters.
If you have regeneration, I'm guessing you just got to Hong Kong? There are two pretty hard to miss spots in Hong Kong that each have several canisters that will let you catch up if you want to.

I recommend not worrying about it too much. Just play how you want to. That is the great thing about the game - being able to play however you want. But, If you really want to make sure you don't miss any, here is a list of canister locations in the game.

So far all the quest places I've been able to get to have been easy to get to. The example I have in Hong Kong is the area with the sniper rifle and the other stuff behind the billboard. I can't get down or back up after getting that stuff. I die if I try to jump on the roof area to the left, which I think is the only way to get down.

Thanks for the link. I have been using that walkthrough when I get stuck. Apparently I should have followed it exactly so I wouldn't miss all the augmentation canisters. I hate doing that though.

I play Dishonored that way. I've beaten it so many times that I'm trying to make it more challenging by no getting upgrades and getting all the achievements. I really hate that I missed those canisters though. It honestly makes me want to start over again because I feel I've missed all the cool augmentations I wanted.

I'm so lost in this game all the time that I really just want to abandon the stupid thing. The augmentation thing has pissed me off now. This game is always so highly rated but this is probably my tenth time trying to play it. It just seems more frustrating than anything, and it's mainly because there is no freaking map. I'm literally lost all the freaking time. Last time I tried this game I had played for five hours as well and I was just in Battery Park. Freaking. Lost.

Try looking at Images; that tab should have an aerial map of your area.

I don't seem to have a map for Hong Kong but a few other places seem to have the aerial view. Do you have to find them or do you just not have one for the level if you don't start with it?
First I want to tell you to NEVER EVER read walkthroughs for RPGs. Most of the time they are written by min-maxers who push you to play unintuitively to get the biggest return profit from how you do things and how you build your character. Veteran DX players often make use of LAMs (grenades) attached to walls to climb on top of them, which is clearly an unintended side effect of making them have collision detection.

If you are still in Hong Kong you aren't very far into the game so starting over is not a very big loss, but on the other hand augmentations are neither spectacular to use or even necessary (unless you're trying to kill your way through the game, then you really need the advantage). Don't worry about having missed some, half of them are REWARDS for exploration, you're not expected to get them all on a normal blind playthrough.

Do pay attention to augmentation UPGRADE canisters though. Most augmentations are pretty marginal before being upgraded one or two levels. You will only have enough upgrade canisters to turn a few of your augments from utterly marginal into very useful tools for killing enemies and faffing about.

I don't remember exactly how the area around the billboard looks, but I recall you should be able to jump into a canal safely to get down. This kind of secret location is probably designed with the Speed augmentation in mind though, a place for dedicated explorers to find. A clear example of why you should not be reading walkthroughs the first time around! Also, a very good example of how augmentations are not necessary: How spectacular was the reward for all that climbing?

There IS a map for Hong Kong. I don't remember how you're supposed to get it but if the game does not give it to you automatically there is probably a terminal in the world or some person you are supposed to talk to to get it.
I believe there is a datacube containing a map of Hong Kong at the newspaper stand in Wan Chai Market.
Yeah, near the start of the Hong Kong streets, there is a newspaper stand. On it is a datacube that says "see attached map of the area" and you get the map. It's not very detailed, though, it only gives a general view of where the main places (Canal St., Versalife building, etc.) are.

I'm not sure where you find this sniper rifle but it would be pretty strange that you can't get away without falling to your death.

And Sufyan is right: augmentations are really bonuses, that's not a big deal if you don't get them. Some of them are found twice in the game and anyway you won't be able to use all of them, you don't have enough slots on you (e.g. for the body itself, I think you find 4 or 5 augs and you only have 3 slots available). Besides, most of them are not very useful or are only on specific occasions if you want to take one path rather than another.

Don't abandon the game because of this. ;)

I rarely use walkthroughs for RPGs for that very reason. There have only been a few I have used them for, this being one of them. The main reason I use them is if I get lost and I'm not sure where to go.

I'm a stealthy sucker, so I don't usually go Duke Nukem. Shooting seems to just be a pain in this game anyway. It takes to long to steady your shot. I do use the stealth pistol, but that's it.

The fall is too far for me. The visual walkthrough site shows me where to jump, but I either die or break both of my legs when I do that. I actually found it without the walkthrough. I didn't have to climb up anything, that I can remember. There is a lot of jumping down on stuff after taking an elevator up, I think.

Yeah, I don't know. The walkthrough said to jump down onto a rooftop area, but it either breaks my legs or kills me. I think it says to use the speed augment, but I'm not sure how that would help the damage from the fall.

It's nice to know it's not a huge issue. I'm just pissed that I keep missing stuff in this game. I really want to enjoy it but so far I've just been frustrated. I'm not a horrible gamer or anything. I mean, I play a lot of old school games that don't have any hand holding, but this game is just hard to me for some reason.
Glad to see you may decide to keep trying to get through the game. You are going to meet many interesting characters and decide the fate of the world if you keep at it! To be fair, the Hong Kong segment is by far the most complex part of the game where about 80% of the accessible areas are completely optional, mostly to find WELL hidden items and talk to people to flesh out the lore. The claustrophobic streets and lack of easily identifiable landmarks is quite overwhelming. Over a decade later and about ten playthroughs I still get lost occasionally.

Once you leave Hong Kong you will get more involved with the many conspiracies and spend less time free-roaming in the streets, spend more time in more focused environments with clear objectives. Paris is quite open, though not nearly as daunting as Hong Kong.

Playing it stealhtily and more specifically as a pascifist makes the game a lot easier and it also means you generally have less use for augmentations. You will only need them in very specific situations. Dropping down from the billboard (nicely done finding it on possibly your first playthrough by the way!) benefits greatly from having a well upgraded Speed Augment because it decreases fall damage in addition to making you run and jump faster and higher.

I'd say the only generally useful augmentations are Regeneration (a quick way to heal) and Ballistic Protection (once upgraded you can become a powered bullet sponge). I also like increased lifting strength, which I believe you have already installed, because there are plenty of places where pushing or lifting heavy crates and furniture is useful.

The invisibility augmentations, one for organics and one for cameras and bots, are not as useful as they seem because there is almost always a way to avoid the enemy and their security systems. Again, being a pascifist is the easiest way to play the game. You don't need augmentations, you don't need weapons. If you never engage and never get caught by the enemy it doesn't even matter if you are playing on Easy or Realistic. Keep a melee weapon for breaking objects and a cattle prod for taking out enemies that are hard to get around. Unless you know the game like the back of your hand you will need a gun too. The stealth pistol is ok, though I prefer to use explosives in those rare instances the game almost forces you to fight.

With this game there are so many different solutions available for each problem that no one thing is ever essential. Don't have enough lockpicks? Find a hidden button or break a window. Need to swim and you don't have good a good swimming skill or aqualung augmentation? Just use a rebreather item. Just remember that this is an older game which means you need to be careful with how you handle your game saves. You can save yourself into a corner with no healing items or ammunition (or on to a high drop from a billboard). Modern games make us lazy with all those abstract checkpoints and by sneaking us some extra ammunition if we keep dying in the same place a few times.

Speed Enhancement also raises your jump height, which correspondingly raises the damage threshold for falling.

Regeneration will eventually heal you to full health, so if you can fall any distance and make progress downward, do it. Or heal yourself with medkits unless you ditched all of them when you installed Regeneration.

I appreciate the well thought out post! I was happy I found the billboard thing too. I was more happy about the lockpick than anything else. Those always seem in short supply even though I break nearly everything in site.

I usually carry a shotgun, stealth pistol, and a sniper rifle.I'm about to ditch the sniper and shotgun. I rarely ever use the sniper rifle and the shotgun is just for emergencies(or fun after I screw up).

I'm a saver. I probably have 50 saves just for this game. I save every ten minutes or so because this game will crash on me sometimes.

Oh, okay. I've never had it so I wasn't sure.

I currently don't have any health kits. The drug dealer and the guy with him in an alley caught me off guard and messed me up pretty bad.

I don't feel like regeneration is doing anything.Do I have to activate it? I've been walking around with my head red (crippled, I guess) for half the mission and it isn't getting healed.

*edit*
Nevermind. I'm an idiot.

Yes: every augmentation has to be activated, they're not passive skills. When they're on, they drain power, which you recharge with electric cells (the silver discs with a blue center).

Thanks. I'm so used to having a crap ton of passive skills in other RPGs that I forgot I had to activate it. I've finally found my objective, so I'm doing well now.
