Hi all.
Windows 8.1 x64, solution with ddwrapper not work:( Yes, laggs less than they were, but can not play.
I almost helped with wine3d option, but there was another problem:
the game does not slow down at all , but interface is hidden during the game (the panel with the modes of character, etc.) as well as the action bar at the top:(
ROSSIJA's ddwrapper works for me in 8.1 64bit, no interface issues, but it's still quite slow above 640x480. I remember having succeeded in playing without stuttering in window mode under Win7, but can't find how I did this again (it was with DxWnd). I've noticed that Robin Hood, another game from the same developers with what appears to be the same engine, works fine with GOG's latest changes to the installer (2.0.0). Maybe they will apply the same fix to Desperados!

I hope so because it's almost unplayable during some missions and no solution has worked till now :-(
Hi all.

In my case, windows8 64bit, Desperados running fast by this way. As an example...
------------------------------------
1 : Download and install D3DWindower.
2 : Run D3DWindower. Drag game.exe onto the there (Or click "+ icon" and select game.exe).
3 : Click "play icon" , then Click "computer icon", then Desperados maybe run WINDOW MODE.

If didn't run Desperados. You can restart D3DWindower.And please try it again. It will run.
!!!You shouldn't introduction "ddraw.dll" into the game folder. It'll be error in this method.!!!
-----------------------------------
This is a just my case, but I hope you have fun this game. Sorry for my english. Thanks.

retrodor: Hi all.

Last week, I downloaded Desperados.
Of cause, it didn't work well. Very slow.

So I searched the way to run well, and tried any method. (thanks to Danny252,ROSSIJA,and others)
But, didn't work well.

In the end, I found other way.
It's work well. Run fast.
But window mode. Not full screen.

------------------------------------
1 : Install Desperados.

2 : Download and install D3DWindower.

3 : Run D3DWindower.

4 : Drag game.exe onto the there (Or click "+ icon" and select game.exe).

5 : Click "play icon" , then Click "computer icon", then Desperados maybe run window mode.

If didn't run Desperados.
You can restart D3DWindower.
And please try again.
In second time,do not click "- icon". you just click "computer icon".
It'll be run.
--------------------------------------

--------------ATTENTION------------
!!! YOU SHOULDN'T INTRODUCTION "aqrit.cfg" "ddraw.dll" "ddwrapper.zip". IT WILL BE ERROR IN THIS METHOD. !!!
-------------------------------------------

I hope you have fun this game.
Sorry for my english. Thanks.
What I don't understand is why, if it is a Win7/Direct Drawl problem, doesn't it affect all Win7/64 users. I have that and no problems.
lordhoff, I don't know why. Sorry, I don't have enough knowledge of computer. In my case, ddraw.dll in game folder bring about error.(When running game.exe with 3D3WINDOWER)
So, I will edit my post.

Its so common with so many games - one thing is believed and likely causes a problem but only affects some. I'm less then a novice with these sorts of issues but if a reason could be found and it was universal, it sure would simplify matters.
windows 8, 64 bit, low-to-mid system specs, Intel graphics

Tried GoG's support tips, tried "d3dwindow" as described in these forums... None worked, game still super laggy, until "dxwnd" did the trick! Not 100% fixed, but at least so it's playable. The game runs smooth in its default lowest res, just the way I remember it from my flawless Windows 98 days, but put 800x600 or higher and the colors get messed up. The mouse pointer is a bit faulty too in the menu (that trailing thing) but in-game there are no problems.

So for me practically everything (as in, game started in default mode with no tweaks in the options menu or elsewhere) now works thanks to dxwnd, but I'm not sure if my success helps others... The game seem to behave differently on different Win8 machines, from what I've gathered on here.

edit: Forgot to mention that the Compatibility Mode checkbox is unticked for me when running game.exe through dxwnd

windows 7/64 bit and windows 8.1/64 bit

Yes, DESPERADOS runs slow under the two systems mentioned above; it runs also slow in the mode of compatibilty.

Therefore I have installed D3DWindower and I started it as described on this site.

The game starts normally in a windows mode and there is no graphic problem. I can click on 'options' and choose the resolution 768x1024. Then I click on 'Play' and the intro starts. Up to this point everything seems to be O.K..
But when I want to play and I touch the mouse the game freezes.

To finish the game I had to start the Task Manager and he shows me the reason: game.exe inactive.

Knows anyone this problem and its reason?
How to play without lag here (on 3min of video):

I'm gonna win gold shovel trophy...

Danny252's solution didn't work for me (Win 8.1, Desperados non-gog 1.01 version). Still running very slow etc.

dgVoodoo2 helped me: How to use it: If you still have crashes, try this:

1. Check if you have msadp32.acm file in Windows\System32. If not, copy it (file below). If you have it, leave it as it is.
2. Next install registry script MS_ADPCM.reg. (file below)
