One person starts a host game and one starts client. Whenver the client tries to connect it doesn't work. I've tried my IP, the IP that my Dosbox says..the other person just plain can't connect. Ever. Very frustrating

D1? D2? D3? D2X-XL? DXX-Rebirth?
Descent the first, or 2. The one I got from Gog
The multiplayer in stock Descent, if I recall correctly, is Baud Modem or IPX or somesuch outdated protocol.
If you want multiplayer, get a source port like Descent Rebirth than you can do TCP over Himachi or simiar.
Yes..but DosBOX emulates an IPX thing. But I suppose no one here knows how to get it to work either?
If you don't want to use DXX-Rebirth or D2X-XL you can either play MP over a LAN using IPX, or you need something like KALI emulating an IPX connection over the inet.

To set up a network game in Descent (or any other DOS game using DOSBox) follow this path: Start Menu -> Programs -> GOG.com -> Descent and Descent 2 -> Descent -> Network .
Now, one of you must host the game by clicking the "Start HOST game" shortcut. Then, the other one must click "Start CLIENT game". A DOSBox command prompt window will pop up and the client must type in 'CONNECT <host's IP address>', as the prompt hints.
This isn't the prettiest user interface known to man, but it works, as long as the host knows his IP and is accessible over the network (use the default UDP port 213 to configure your router if needed).
The connection between host and client should be established almost immediately - if there is a delay of a couple of seconds, followed by an error message, then the connection failed and you will have to close Descent and try again.
If both players are connected, they should go into the MULTIPLAYER menu and manage from there. ;)

I'd suggest getting D1/2X Rebirth. It allows for playing D1/2 through TCP/IP (internet) and is easier to setup. Just d/l the files and start the game using the modified exe file.
Whoever hosts the game has to open the port DOSBox is using on their router. If not, it'll be blocked by default. There may be other difficulties in setting up a network game, but I've found this to hang up many an attempt to play games online with other people.
