I don't have a problem with the game being emulated, but the way the site presents everything, i was under the impression this was a modernized version of the game with 3d acceleration and everything. You might want to put on the site somewhere that if the game is emulated your aware of it.

Interesting that you had that impression, I guess I didn't assume the games would be updated, rather you would be able to play the games as they were. Some of these games work just fine on modern operating systems while others require an emulation layer. What I like so much is that you can just download the package and it works!

GOG just makes sure a game runs, they don't add new features. Still, if you want updated graphics and features, look at this. It works with the GOG Descent 1&2, and gives you 3D acceleration among other things.

I was under the impression that they were ports, like Xbox Live Arcade games. Not remakes, but recoded to work natively on Windows. But it's just DOSbox, which is something anyone can get for free. At least it's automatically configured and works better than I've ever been able to get DOSbox to work before.

Yes, this is largely the draw of the service, aside from being dirt-cheap and DRM-free. You don't have to mess with the program beyond installing it--unless you want mods, which conveniently have stickied threads devoted to them in these forums. And I daresay that GOG's target demographic may not necessarily be computer-savvy enough to know how to set up DOSBox and configure its myriad parameters just right to get a game running smoothly. I should hope that nobody is genuinely disappointed at what they're getting with GOG.

And, you don't have to get the games from semi-legal abandonware sites. I don't care how they do it, as long as I can play it the way it was back in 1994, and that's exactly what I get. And for 5.99$...can't get any better (except more games of course =) )

You take the game content from GOG and basically just unpack rebirth into the directory with the PIG and HOG files. All the configuration is handled through menus now, it used to be in the ini file.
Have you tried that?

I agree too. I thought, for some reason, that GOG would have done something like the Rebirth project. Never expected them to use emulation. Oh well, it gives it the old-school feel. I'm guessing that's why half the people here are here, haha. Playing D1 emulated was pretty cool but it got old after a while since I was so used to Rebirth. Bought the package for a legitimate version of D2.

I think it was the whole thing with it saying it requires directX or openGL. I've used dosbox in the past, but i always think of 3d when i hear about opengl. I never said i was disapointed in what im getting, just surprised.

GoG has a great service but you should be clear about what that service is. They don't have the rights to the source material, so they can't "port" the game or re-write it with modern graphics etc. What they can do is repackage it in a manner that works in a modern operating system.
At only $5.99 these games are a steal, especially when you consider it's almost impossible to purchase them legally any other way, and they come pre-configured to work right out of the box. I don't know about you, but my time and frustration is worth more than six bucks. The only thing GoG needs is more games!
