I was trying to play descent 3 with a friend of mine using the direct TCP/IP and for some reason we couldn’t find each other. I tried using my laptop and my comp and we found each other but we can’t. Do we have to use the “Search for game by address” thing and if so what address is it talking about; we already tried IP address and the name of the game. Any suggestions?

You might want to make sure any firewall you have installed is disabled, be it Windows/McAfee/Norton, etc., as they will often block incoming connections.
eh still not working
With the re-release of descent on GOG I've been trying to get back into the multiplayer scene again. :) (yes there still is a multiplayer scene)
The best Utility I've found so far is Vortex, its a great application with some really nice features.
Vortex available at: http://www.slyclan.de/ (includes automatic level download feature)
The best place to find the most current descent info is the descent BB. I shamelessly pulled the above information from this thread http://www.descentbb.net/viewtopic.php?t=4953
Now I just need some other rusty pilots to shoot. Get on there guys. :)

k i'll mess with it, thanks
is pxo still around? i cant find it online and neither can the game, is there any other public way to play? (excluding IP, modem, LAN) and i want descent 4 to come
PXO is long dead. There is a program called VORTEX that allows you to play D3 online with servers.

If you goto www.descentbb.net there is tons of info there.

As for playing TCP. you need to know your IP address. It will look like 24.214.168.56 or something. When you start the game, you need to give your IP to the other person and he also needs to put it in his D3 TCP game but also include the port number which if I remember correctly is 2093 for the first server.

All this is available at the DBB.net

You can also use a program called VORTEX. It's a D3 tracker/Chat program that replaced PXO.
