Im thinking of getting Descent 3 and i cant quite work out what type of game it is amongst other aspects.
Is it a space trading game like X-Gold, Elite etc?
Is it just some multiplayer deathmatch game?
Is there any story? How is the story relayed, via ingame cutscenes or just a text box on screen?
Do you upgrade your ship, buy new ships,purchase new items, gain new abilities?
Outside of the Descent and freespace series itself, what is the game that is closest to Descent in terms of game style and playability?

well descent 3 is like descent 1 and 2. it's like a giant maze that you have to figure your way through while blasting bots in a 3d world. there's a little story, but the fun of it is figuring out how to get through the maze.
I've never seen anything quite like descent.

Descent is very unique. The best way to describe it would be "Doom with vertigo". While the first games followed the basic "Get keycards, blow up end reactor, get to exit" formula, Descent 3 mixed things up a bit, and also included more outdoor areas. Very very awesome game, but you NEED a joystick to get the most out of it.

Actually u dont HAVE to have a joystick. sure it makes playing easier, but well, i play it with only the keyboard. and Descent 3 also haz bonus objectives

I aggree I use a combinaison of mouse and keyboard. I am better whit this than whit a joystick(and I ave play alot whit a joystick)

To answer your question more directly... D3 was a strong game once you got into it, but it had a very different feel than the first two, which were a little bit darker. Overall, the games are great and hugely important to game design at the time. Unlike most games from that era though, they're still a lot of fun and hold up pretty well. Highly reccomended.

So what about Descent: Freespace 1 and 2? Are those more "Trader" type games, like the OP mentioned?

No. They're similar to X-Wing, TIE Fighter, or Wing Commander.

I concur. Well made video, though it would've been cool to mention you get decent 1 and 2 in the GOG.com package ;) nice GOG.com plug though.

I actually *own* x2, but I have never played it. I got it some years back off of fileplanet when I "tried" out their full priced service. (Now I don't understand why I tried it...but eh that happens.) I got Thief 3 and x2 out of the deal. I guess I'll install x2 and check it out.
