Hello good-old-gamers :) I don't know if this has been asked before, but I'd like to know from you:

1) What's the best Descent game for you in the series? Why?
2) What's the hardest Descent game for you? Why?

The first time I played Descent was when I had a PS1 back in the nineties. I played Descent Maximum and several years later I learned this is actually a version of Descent 2. I couldn't finish the game but I got amazed about it at the time. Last year I learned about a new Descent game being developed (Descent Underground) and I decided to revive the series. I purchased all games from 1 to 3 when they were still being sold by GOG and I'm enjoying it very much. I'm still playing the first Descent and I'm finding it pretty difficult so far (playing on Rookie - yes I know I suck), although I'm having a lot of fun.

So I just want to know how the games will get easier (or harder), compared to what I've played so far :)

I would say Decent 1 is both the hardest and my favorite :) There are some super annoying little guys in Descent 2, but overall it felt a lot easier (although the puzzles and stuff SUCKS sometimes). Descent 3 isn't very hard at all...just a pain in the butt cause the level design is so HUGE and it doesn't feel right.

Also, if you like Descent, check out Overload. It's by the creators of Descent and is 9,000 times better than Descent: Underground :)

Would you say the reason why Descent 2 feels easier is because the experience acquired with the first game makes it feel so?

Probably it's radically different color palette with some toxic colors here and there, stupidly designed new bots (all old ones are removed for no reason), ridicously constant lava streams, boringly long levels (PC version, not PSX), banal new bosses (with annoying immunites).
The game also added one more unneeded mine type, doubled the weapon arsenal, very blant for my liking, new triangle mine trap (how imaginitive), the one that special bot that steals and runs from you (getting on whoever nerves I presume). There is a guidebot which you should never release (only if there is a secret door behind it with invulnerability and lots of shield), guidebot will kill you with its flares and it will cause a few Pyro GX crashes making irrational 180 degree turns right before your very nose. It will kill all the remaining fun.

In original Descent (1994-1995) it was the feeling on loliness, enemy bots could shread your ships in split second. That was the game made exactly for default difficulty level, it was hard, it gave really challenge, more and more over new level, it's the game in the best sense of video gameplay process.

My verdict:
Descent 1 - ideal game of the '90s
Descent 2 - another boring clone of Descent

Oh so are the levels in Descent Maximum (PS1) actually different from the PC version? Like I said I've played the PS1 version in the past but I didn't start playing the PC version of Descent 2 yet.

Yes, they are. You may download Descent Maximum levels already converted for PC version.

Not really. I think it's just honestly an easier game...the robot AI isn't as difficult and the weapons aren't balanced quite as well.

I wouldn't go quite as far as Cadaver...I think Descent 2 is a great game in it's own right, but I definitely prefer D1. D3 however is legitimately not as good a game lol

I thought the first Descent was the most difficult when I first played it. I'll always remember it as that. The first boss guy use to own me endlessly with his stupid smart missiles. Again when I was new to the Descent series.

My favorite one is however Descent II. I liked the cutscenes, seeing the pyro in cgi-3d. The updated Hud was awesome as well.

Descent III was good but the opening cutscene made me cry [so sue me] when the GX was cut open and droped into the near by star like a piece of trash. It was like, seeing your first car towed away after it had failed to start for the last time.

Haha, this might be a bit spam-ish. But ditto. The haunting soundtrack did it :P

My thoughts

D1: Probably my favorite as it felt more consistent than D2. Can't really explain why though.

D2: Liked it but the levels felt more cramped than D1 making it easy to get blindsided. I also didn't like walls randomly popping up out of nowhere. I did like some of the new weapons though, especially the guided missiles

D3: Became annoyed with it. I thought it was cool to be able to travel along the surface of planets but the wide open areas, fast moving enemies but slow moving weapon projectiles meant you were mostly going to the using the vauss (which felt weak), mass driver, homing missiles and cyclones a lot. Otherwise, hitting anything could be a pain. The different ships were also kinda pointless. There wasn't a single time in the game speed was more useful than more armour so I used the Magnum ship when it came available.

Looking forward to D:U :)

Sorry it took a while to post.

I found the levels much better in D3. Better visuals and easier to find people in today's times.

Interesting. I asked because back in the days my friends and I found D3 too horizontal laid out and crammed. As fans of six-axis combat, we preferred the D1+2 levels with their occasionally big, barrier-free rooms and their uncompromising 3D geometry.

That said, we didn't play D3 much because of that, so the later levels may be better (for us) in those regards. Everyone has their own preferences and I am always curious about the reasons behind other opinions, so thanks again and feel free to elaborate if you wish (if not, it's also okay).

The later levels in D3 were much better than the first 10 or so. Don't get me wrong, I love D2 to death. I still play single to this day and I have the D1 converted levels for D2.

D3 seemed to me a more updated version of D2. I loved the sounds, loved the weapons, the textures and overall the multiplayer. I played a lot of D2 multi but I think I played more D3 multi included more LANs.
