I think it would make the game more fun if there was some way to respec ability points (or allow the new recruits to have points assigned as you wish).
My strategy didn't change at all from level 7 to 10, and I got so bored of the game. I couldn't try anything new because the skill allocation for recruits are pretty bad. I wanted to start over again with a new team because I was just so bored. But then I thought maybe that would just get boring too, so I kept grinding through it. I had over 20,000 credits and just bought any gear that could be an upgrade. There was no challenge, just a grind until the final boss.
It might make sense not to permit respec ability points in hardcore mode.
