So I have been waiting for GOG to add this for awhile, so I bought it right when it came out. But I have a problem, but not just with this version, I also have the original disk and I have the same problem. When I start it, the video play just fine, but once I am at the main screen the screen goes black, I am on Windows 8, but I don't think that is the problem, because I have tried it on Ubuntu as well I have the exact same problem, so it seems hardware related.

Any Ideas?
THANKS!

Having the exact same problem on Windows 8.1 (with the second game; didn't try the first one so far).

I can see everything normal, but the second I move the mouse, everything goes black except the area around the mouse cursor. If I start the tutorial, everything works, then turns black, hitting escape makes everything visible again.

Strange. Also the first one works fine :) I hope we can figure this out.
You guys may be out of luck unfortunately. GOG's gamecard doesn't say the game runs on Windows 8 - http://www.gog.com/game/deadlock_2_shrine_wars - so you may want to request a refund.
Yeah I saw that, but was still hopeful :( But what is strange about it is the I get the exact same glitch on different OS on this pc. What gives me hope is that when I install it from the disk the game works fine, but when I apply the patch I get the glitch.

Research has saved me from buying four games today.

Shame this doesn't work on 8 'cause it looks quite good but would've been more of a shame had i pounced the current $8 deal. 0_O

The first game is supported for Windows 8 - the second game is not.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I think some are arguing the first was the better of the two anyway.
Just because a software, out-of-the-box, does not work on the particular version of the OS you are using, is not a reason not to try to find a way to get it to work. I'm certain that GOG would like it to work on 8, as well. That they did not list 8 is reason to think that they fiddled with it a bit, but failed. However, there are many many cases where users in the forums solved problems that the GOG staff failed to solve.

One thing I've noticed is that the screen displays fine until I move the mouse. As soon as the cursor attempts to move, the screen blacks out. I'm going to try a few things and see what I come up with.

I'm assuming the pirated version is pre-patch. The disk based version also works before the game is updated. For some reason something in the patch breaks it on 8.1.
Well, I'm stumped. I fiddled with all the compatibility settings, and with my graphics card settings.

I couldn't find any settings for mouse, as I hoped for. In older versions of Windows, I recall a compatibility switch having to do with the mouse, but it seems not to exist on 8 (I've only had 8 for a couple of weeks now, and I'm still figuring out how to use it).

What I think should come next is to break the auto-dosbox setup that GOG inserted and do that part manually. And fiddle with the dosbox settings. I've never done this and I'm not sure how to go about it, though. If I get ambitious this weekend, I might give it a try.

You guys say that the unpatched version works on 8? Is that the 1.2 patch you are talking about? I looked for that patch so I could see if there was a clue in the notes and finally found a link to the patch here:

There is a txt file with notes, but nothing helpful occurred to me when I read it.

Anyhow, I don't want to discourage anyone else from trying things out. Let us know if you have any ideas.
I've been trying to run this game in WINE (WS9 1.7.10, and WS9 1.5.31X), and I've been bit with the same bug. I'm wondering if it's a rendering issue of some sort.

Yeah I was talking about the 1.2 patch. I was hoping to possibly run the game in a window rather than full screen to see if that would help the rendering bug, but I can't get it to switch. I ended up installing Windows 7 on a different partition for now :-P
