Just bought Deadlock II the other day and was exited but I cant seem to get it working

FIRST PROBLEM
So I had the "DirectDraw Init Failed" problem with windows 7, and did all I could to try and fix it. (Ran it as Administrator, tried with every single different compatibility mode, etc.) The only thing that seemed to work was to change the shortcut's TARGET to "C:\GOG Games\Deadlock II - Shrine Wars\DEADLOCK.EXE" -w

SECOND PROBLEM
Once I got that somewhat fixed, even though the colors don't look right, I never actually got to check how the game would play because I ran into another error! DEADLOCK 2 CD-ROM NOT FOUND

It's asking me to put in my Deadlock 2 CD into the CD-ROM drive and then press "ok" which of course I do not have.

THIRD PROBLEM (maybe)
I'm willing to troubleshoot a little more, but I'm getting the feeling that it would be just another waste of time (if the colors are all jacked, then I would still deem the game unplayable)

I appreciate any help

It is a bit off a wild guess, but did you try to install directx 9c? AFAIR 7 is using 10 ? If so some dlls could be missing.
For the cd-rom problem, shall not appear with the GOG version, I suggest you contact GOG-supprt and open a ticket with them. In case of the 30 days, I suggest to point them to your questions you raised on this forum ;)

Here is part of a post I found over at the Deadlock series fansite Gallia IV. I have not tried it yet, but will report back after I do. It seems like a promising solution, as I currently have the game installed on a removable SD card and can't get past the CD check. (I could not find any thread here at GOG regarding the mentioned report after a cursury attempt, but hopefully won't need to. We'll see.)

It seems that when you install DL2 from GOG outside C: drive, it won't work and will keep asking for the CD.
I'm pondering if I should report it there.

[edit] reported as launch issue.
[edit] they claim it works on an actual mounted hard drive, because my other drives were remote and directx (employed API) doesn't detect them correctly.

I'm following up on my previous reply in this separate one because I think it will be clearer that it is me talking this way. Here is the fix for the CD check issue:

First, I completely uninstalled the game from my ASUS tablet's SD card. Then I did a fresh install to my C: drive. Viola! Cello! Violin! Worked like a charm. The game now starts without doing a CD check and goes to the normal game menu instead of the substitute menu you get if it checks and the CD's not in the drive.

For the record, I'm not mad at GOG for not making a game published back when CD-ROMs for computers were still considered fancy and hi-tech recognize any other kind of drive you might throw at it, but I do hope they will put this thread in some appropriately prominent place for other users who might need it. The solution was neither obvious to me up front, nor easy to find, so I'd like to make it a little easier for the next guy, if possible.

Next I have to go address the black screen issue (had it fixed once but now I get to do it again for this new install) so I can actually play. I'll come back and post the fix in a bit. It IS already available here in this forum, but I can save people from having to wade through a three-page-long thread of back-and-forth fix attempts by posting the successful solution by itself here.

Okay, and here it is, the fix for the black screen problem:

Cut and Paste the following address into your browser because it's been awhile and my BB-Fu is weak: https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat/releases

Download "ddraw.zip" from the newest release, or use the release I used: v0.2.1

Extract the .zip file and then copy or move ddraw.dll to the same directory that deadlock.exe is in.

Done. Enjoy,

edit: I'm doing all of this in Windows 10, btw, but I imagine it will work for 7 & 8 as well.
