I just verfied my installation and I got the same error.
Run the game with admin privileges and in windows xp compatibility. Fixed it for me.
running under XP compat (tried with sp2 and 3) and with admin still gives me the black screen again.... do I need a different version of draw.dll?
I also have override high dpi scaling behavior checked as well. I don't know if you need another version of ddraw. I have ddraw, but no idea what version it is.
Hogh DPI is checked but greyed out... do you have any of the other rez boxes checked? and are you running sp 2 or 3?

Also had the same black screen error initially and now getting the same directdraw fail upon start... where do you find the “override high dpi scaling”?
Cheers

Right click on either the shortcut or the .exe file itself and then 'Properties', then 'Compatibility' and you should see it.
Hey, if you get the game running, can you let me know if the in-game music works? :)

Thanks mate, got past the "directdraw init fail" and the game boots up, only to get to what I assume is the same black screen issue facing you guys...

Just to clarify: I get to the main menu fine, but as soon as I move the mouse, the screen goes black with the exception of the mouse pointer and whatever small bunch of pixels the mouse is hovering over.

EDIT: Managed to fix it by downloading the directdraw.dll fix on the main discussion board!
For anyone new to the thread, it's here: https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat
- I used the Dec 23, 2016 version,
- copied it to the Deadlock 2 main folder (there was no directdraw file in the first place
- boots fine, i've got the main menu going, and there is faint music in the background.
