I believe it's the DX9 version because when I launch the game, I get an error about d3dx9_32.dll missing.

Yes, you need to get the missing dll file and put it in the folder where Darwinia is installed.
I found mine on an internet website specialized in dll files. I forgot the name but you can just search the dll filename + download and voila.

Hmm, not sure about downloading .dll files from any website. I have directx10 by default and as far as I know it is not a mere upgrade of the directx9, reason because there are issues with particular files. Shouldn't be better to install directx9 ?
In case the dll is from a safe place, please tell me where exactly did you find it.
