Joy: Extreme 3D Pro (Logitech)

I have the stick compiled to Dark Star but I'm trying the first training mission and I don't seem to be able to do much other then after burner from the key pad. Joy stick doesn't appear to do anything except (maybe) throttle. Do I need to unplug the mouse to make this work? Mouse curser seems to be working fine. Tried some of the keyboard controls and some things work such as "log". Probably real basic - I'm not gifted with PC use. Any suggestions?

Tech support unable to help so, if anyone has an idea, let me know otherwise this game (which looks promising) will have to be returned for credit.

It's been too long ago so I don't remember but I doubt that I did. They wouldn't credit my account either so I was forced to, for the most part, stop buying GOG games until my backlog is depleted. They have a time limit on refunds.
